Description
AKG P220 Large-Diaphragm Condenser Microphone
AKG P220 is a large-diaphragm cardioid condenser for vocals, acoustic guitar and other studio sources. A switchable pad and bass-cut filter adapt it to different levels and positions, while its shock mount helps isolate stand vibration.
Why Choose AKG P220?
Choose the P220 for a focused single-pattern microphone rather than multiple pickup patterns. Experiment with distance and a clean gain setting first. Use the pad on strong sources when needed, and apply the filter only when it improves the recording.
Key Features
- Cardioid capsule: suits focused vocal and instrument recording.
- −20 dB pad: helps accommodate strong sources.
- Bass-cut filter: assists with low-frequency rumble.
- Shock mount and carrying case: part of the standard manufacturer package.
Best Suited For
Home and project studios, vocal recording and instrument sessions where a controlled recording space is available.
Setup and Connection Guide
Use a balanced XLR cable and an appropriate phantom-powered microphone input. Lower monitoring levels before connecting or switching power. For vocals, place a pop filter between the singer and capsule and use a stable stand. Set gain from a full-level performance, leaving headroom for louder phrases rather than recording close to clipping.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does it offer an omnidirectional setting?
No. Its pickup is cardioid. Compare the AKG P420 if you need cardioid, omnidirectional and figure-eight settings for different techniques.
Will it remove room echo?
No. A studio microphone records the sound reaching it, including reflections and background noise. Placement, a quieter room and suitable acoustic treatment can be more useful than heavy processing afterwards.
Do I need a separate audio interface?
For computer recording, use an interface or mixer with a suitable microphone preamp, phantom power and a computer audio connection. The microphone’s XLR connector is not a USB connection.
