Turntables buying guide

This section covers vinyl turntables and record players, DJ players and controllers, and digital music players and DAC/media players, from Audio-Technica, Pioneer DJ, AlphaTheta, Rotel, Marley, Zidoo, Dune and Samsung. Whether you are starting a vinyl collection, building a DJ setup or creating a high-resolution music system, you will find the right source here.

Types of turntables

  • All-in-one record players: built-in speakers and preamp for simple, affordable vinyl listening.
  • Turntables with built-in preamp: connect directly to powered speakers or any amplifier.
  • Bluetooth turntables: stream vinyl to wireless speakers and headphones.
  • Hi-Fi turntables: better tonearms, platters and cartridges for audiophile sound, usually with a separate phono stage.
  • DJ turntables: direct-drive, high-torque turntables for scratching and mixing.

Choosing a turntable

  • Drive type: belt drive isolates motor noise for home listening; direct drive gives quick start-up and stable speed for DJs.
  • Cartridge: the cartridge and stylus have a big effect on sound. Many turntables allow upgrades.
  • Built-in preamp: needed if your amplifier has no phono input.
  • Automatic vs manual: automatic turntables lower and lift the tonearm for you.

Setting up your turntable

Place it on a solid, level surface away from speakers to avoid feedback. Set tracking force and anti-skate as recommended by the cartridge maker, and connect the ground wire to avoid hum. Keep records clean and replace the stylus periodically.

DJ and digital players

DJ players and controllers from Pioneer DJ and AlphaTheta range from beginner controllers to club-standard CDJs and all-in-one systems. Media and DAC players from Zidoo and Dune play high-resolution music and 4K movie files for audiophiles and home theatres.

Building a vinyl system

A simple vinyl system includes a turntable, a phono preamp (built-in or separate), an amplifier and speakers, or a turntable with powered speakers. Upgrade the cartridge and phono stage over time for better sound.
