Powered/Active Speakers buying guide
Powered (active) speakers have the amplifier built inside the cabinet, so you only need a source: your TV, computer, phone, turntable or mixer. Many add Bluetooth, optical, USB, HDMI ARC and phono inputs, making them a compact all-in-one alternative to separate amplifiers and passive speakers. Our range includes home powered speakers from Edifier, Klipsch and Bluetooth bookshelf models, as well as PA and studio models, priced from about ₹9,000.
Benefits of powered speakers
- Simple setup: plug into power and your source. No separate amplifier, no speaker wire calculations.
- Space saving: ideal for desks, bedrooms and compact living rooms.
- Matched amplification: the amplifier is designed for the drivers, often with bi-amping and DSP tuning.
- Many inputs: connect your TV, phone, PC and turntable at the same time.
Types of powered speakers
- Home powered bookshelf speakers: for music and TV, with Bluetooth and optical inputs.
- Desktop speakers: compact models for computers and gaming setups.
- Studio monitors: accurate active speakers for music production and editing.
- PA speakers: loud, rugged powered speakers for events, DJs, churches and halls.
How to choose
- Inputs: optical or HDMI ARC for TVs, phono for turntables, USB for computers, XLR/TRS for mixers.
- Bluetooth codec: aptX or LDAC for higher-quality streaming from Android phones.
- Sub Out: lets you add a subwoofer for deeper bass.
- Woofer size and power: 4-inch for desks; 5 to 6.5-inch for rooms; 10 to 15-inch for PA.
- Remote and app control: handy for TV use.
Powered speakers for TV
Connect powered speakers to your TV's optical output or HDMI ARC (if supported) for a big improvement over TV speakers and a wider stereo image than many soundbars. Add a subwoofer for movies.
Powered speakers for turntables
Choose speakers with a built-in phono preamp, or add a separate phono preamplifier, and connect the turntable directly for a simple vinyl system.
Setting them up well
Place the speakers at ear height, 4 to 8 feet apart, and slightly angled toward you. Keep them a little away from the wall to avoid boomy bass. Desktop speakers benefit from small stands or isolation pads that tilt the tweeters toward your ears.

Can I add a subwoofer to powered speakers?
Yes, if the speakers have a Sub Out or pre-out connection.
Are powered speakers good for turntables?

Do powered speakers need two power sockets?
