In-wall vs on-wall speakers

• In-wall speakers fit inside a cut-out in a drywall or gypsum partition. They are almost invisible once the grille is painted to match the wall. Best fitted during construction or renovation.
• On-wall speakers are slim cabinets that hang on a bracket. They suit finished rooms, rented homes and brick walls where cutting is not practical.
• LCR speakers (left, centre, right) are designed to sit beside and below a TV, often in a horizontal or vertical orientation.

Placement tips

Mount front speakers at roughly ear height when seated, on either side of the screen. Place surround speakers to the sides of the seating, about 60 to 90 cm above ear level. Keep in-wall speakers away from corners, pipes and electrical boxes, and seal the cavity around the speaker to stop rattles.

Do in-wall speakers sound as good as box speakers?
