Sony PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Slim Console

Sony PlayStation 5 Digital Edition (Slim) — 1TB SSD, 4K 120Hz Gaming, No Disc Drive

The PlayStation 5 Digital Edition (slim) packs the full PS5 hardware — the same AMD Zen 2 processor, RDNA 2 graphics and ultra-fast SSD as the disc model — into a body roughly 30% smaller than the original 2020 console. There is no disc drive: every game is bought and downloaded from the PlayStation Store. What you get instead is the lightest PS5 Sony has made, at 2.6 kg, with a larger 1TB SSD, a DualSense controller in the box, and ASTRO’s PLAYROOM pre-installed so you can play within minutes of setup.

Key features

• Full PS5 performance: 8-core AMD Ryzen Zen 2 CPU and a 10.3 TFLOPS RDNA 2 GPU with ray tracing — identical power to the disc version.
• 1TB ultra-high-speed SSD: custom storage with 5.5 GB/s raw read speed for near-instant loading, expandable later with an M.2 NVMe SSD.
• 4K gaming at up to 120fps: HDMI 2.1 output with 4K 120Hz, HDR and variable refresh rate (VRR) support, plus 8K output for compatible displays.
• Tempest 3D AudioTech: object-based spatial audio through headphones or your TV speakers.
• DualSense controller included: haptic feedback and adaptive triggers that change resistance to match the on-screen action.
• PS4 backward compatibility: play the large majority of the PS4 library, with faster, smoother frame rates in many titles.

All-digital: how gaming works without discs

Every game on this console comes from the PlayStation Store over your internet connection. Your library lives on your PlayStation Network account, not on a shelf — sign in on the console and everything you own is there to download. That suits players who buy during digital sales, subscribe to PlayStation Plus, or simply do not want discs around the house. It does mean game downloads are large, so a reasonably fast broadband connection matters. If you change your mind later, Sony’s detachable Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive (sold separately) clips onto this console and converts it into the disc model.

The SSD is the real upgrade

The custom SSD reads data at 5.5 GB/s raw, and the console’s integrated I/O hardware decompresses it on the fly, so games load in seconds and level transitions that used to hide behind loading screens largely disappear. The 1TB capacity is a step up from the original model’s 825GB — room for a healthy rotation of big titles. When it fills up, an open M.2 slot inside accepts a Gen4 NVMe SSD for extra space without giving up speed.

Picture, sound and the controller

On a 4K TV with HDMI 2.1, supported games run at up to 120 frames per second with HDR colour and VRR smoothing out frame-rate dips; ray tracing adds realistic reflections and shadows where developers use it. Tempest 3D AudioTech places sounds in space around you — rain above, footsteps behind — through standard headphones. The DualSense completes the package: its haptics render textures like gravel or rain, and the adaptive triggers tighten or slacken, whether you are drawing a bow or braking into a corner.

Choose the Digital Edition if your games already live online and you want the smallest, lightest PS5. It plays every PS5 game the disc model does — it just buys them differently.
