How to choose an AV receiver

• Channels: a 5.2 receiver runs a 5.1 system. A 7.2 receiver can run 7.1 or 5.1.2 Atmos. 9.2 and above can run 5.1.4 or 7.1.2. 11 to 13 channels handle large 7.1.4 and 9.1.4 setups.
• Power: check watts per channel at 8 ohms, and whether the receiver supports 4 or 6-ohm speakers.
• HDMI 2.1: 8K and 4K/120 Hz inputs matter for PS5, Xbox Series X, gaming PCs and new TVs. Look for VRR and ALLM for gaming.
• Room correction: Audyssey MultEQ XT32, Dirac Live or AccuEQ measure your room and tune the system.
• Streaming: HEOS, AirPlay 2, Chromecast and Spotify Connect for music.
• Pre-outs: let you add power amplifiers or multiple subwoofers later.
• Zone 2: play music in another room.

Denon receivers focus on features, power and value, and are the most popular choice in India. Marantz receivers share technology with Denon but add a warmer, more musical sound and a premium design, making them a favourite for music lovers. Setting up your AV receiver

Connect all sources to the receiver's HDMI inputs and run one HDMI cable from the receiver's HDMI out (eARC) to the TV. Connect speakers with good-quality cable, then run the auto-calibration with the supplied microphone at your main seat. Set speakers to "Small" with an 80 Hz crossover if you have a subwoofer.

A soundbar is simple and compact. An AV receiver with separate speakers gives far more power, clarity, immersion and upgrade options, and is the right choice for serious home theatre in living rooms, projector rooms and dedicated cinemas.

Gaming with an AV receiver

For PS5 and Xbox Series X, connect the console to an HDMI 2.1 input supporting 4K/120 Hz, and enable VRR and ALLM. Use "Game" mode or "Pure Direct" for the lowest latency.

Keeping your receiver healthy

AV receivers produce heat. Give them at least 10 to 15 cm of clearance above and behind, avoid stacking other devices on top, and use the receiver's firmware updates to add features and fix bugs.

FAQs about AV Receivers

How many channels do I need?

For a 5.1 system, a 7.2 receiver gives room to grow. For Dolby Atmos with four ceiling speakers (5.1.4), choose a 9.2-channel receiver or larger.

Denon or Marantz, which is better?

Both are excellent and share technology. Denon offers more features for the price; Marantz has a warmer sound and premium build. We recommend a demo at our store.

Does the receiver support 4K and 8K?

Most current models support 4K/120 Hz and 8K/60 Hz through HDMI 2.1 inputs. Check the product page for the number of HDMI 2.1 ports.

Can I connect a turntable to an AV receiver?

Yes, if the receiver has a phono input. Otherwise, add a phono preamplifier.

Can I play music from my phone?
