Denon AVR-X550BT

Denon AVR-X550BT 5.2 AV Receiver

The Denon AVR-X550BT is a 5.2-channel AV receiver built around the essentials of home cinema: five channels of discrete, high-current amplification, full 4K video switching and lossless surround decoding, without the network streaming hardware fitted to higher-tier models. It drives a 5.1 speaker system with a second subwoofer output in reserve, decodes Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio from Blu-ray and streaming sources, and adds Bluetooth for quick music playback from a phone. There is no Wi-Fi, Ethernet or HEOS on this model, and that focus is the point: the budget goes into the amplifier and video sections.

Power is rated at 70 watts per channel into 8 ohms (20 Hz to 20 kHz, 0.08% THD, two channels driven), 90 watts into 6 ohms, and up to 130 watts into 6 ohms with one channel driven. All five channels use discrete amplifier stages rather than integrated chips, which helps the receiver hold together during demanding film passages and drive a wide range of speakers, with 6 to 16 ohm loads supported.

Key features

• 5.2 channels with discrete high-current amplification on all five channels
• Five HDMI inputs and one output, with HDCP 2.2 on three inputs
• 4K/60 Hz full-rate pass-through with 4:4:4 colour, HDR, Dolby Vision and HLG support
• Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio lossless surround decoding
• Built-in Bluetooth that remembers up to eight paired devices
• Microphone-assisted auto speaker setup, on-screen Setup Assistant and front USB music playback

Video switching and connections

The HDMI section passes 4K Ultra HD at 60 Hz with BT.2020 wide colour gamut, 3D and 21:9 video pass-through, plus ARC and HDMI-CEC for single-remote control with a compatible TV, and standby pass-through so a source can reach the TV without waking the system. Around the back there are also two optical and one coaxial digital inputs, two analogue audio inputs, two composite video inputs and a composite monitor output for legacy sources, an FM/AM tuner, two subwoofer pre-outs and a front headphone socket. The front USB port plays music files from a USB drive.

Setup and everyday use

Denon’s guided Setup Assistant walks through speaker connection and configuration on the TV screen, and the supplied microphone measures the room so levels and distances are set automatically. Four Quick Select buttons store preferred settings for favourite sources, ECO mode trims power consumption in quieter listening, and the larger-character display is easy to read from the sofa. A sleep timer and the supplied remote control round out straightforward daily operation for the whole household.

The AVR-X550BT is the right receiver for a focused 5.1 or 5.2 room: Blu-ray, streaming box, console and set-top sources through one hub, proper discrete amplification, and nothing spent on network features the system will never use.
