The ELAC SUB1020 is a powered subwoofer from the Debut 2.0 series, pairing a 10 inch high-excursion woofer with a built-in BASH amplifier rated at 120 W peak and 60 W RMS. It exists for the simplest reason in audio: most bookshelf and many floorstanding speakers roll off before the lowest notes, so kick drums lose weight, film effects lose pressure and organ or synth bass simply goes missing. The SUB1020 puts that foundation back.

Because the amplifier is built in, there is nothing extra to buy or configure beyond a cable from your receiver or amplifier. Rear controls for volume, crossover and phase, plus RCA line-level and speaker-level inputs, let it blend with stereo systems that have no dedicated subwoofer output as well as with modern AV receivers that do.

Blending in, not booming over

A subwoofer set up badly announces itself: one-note boom, bass that arrives late and a cabinet you can locate with your eyes closed. Set up well, it disappears, and the main speakers simply sound larger and more complete. The SUB1020’s continuously adjustable crossover lets you hand over exactly where your main speakers fade, the phase control aligns its output with theirs at your seat, and the volume control should end where bass supports the music rather than leading it. Start low and increase slowly; the correct setting often feels surprisingly modest.

Placement shapes the result

Rooms reinforce bass unevenly, so position matters as much as specification. Near the front of the room, close to the main speakers, is the reliable starting point, leaving space behind the port so it can work freely. A corner will maximise output but can exaggerate boom; moving the cabinet out along a wall trades a little level for a lot of evenness. Small movements make audible differences, so experiment before finalising, and re-check the phase after any move.

For music, films and games

In a Debut 2.0 stereo system it completes the range the bookshelf models were designed to hand over. With a soundbar or compact speakers that offer a line output, it adds the physical impact those products cannot produce alone. For films, the benefit is felt as much as heard: a closing door, distant thunder or a passing train gains a physical presence that small speakers cannot create by themselves, even at a moderate evening volume.
