JBL Stage 220P 12-Inch Powered Subwoofer – The Bass Foundation of Stage 2

The JBL Stage 220P is the larger of the two powered subwoofers in JBL’s Stage 2 loudspeaker series, built to supply the low-frequency foundation that the range’s bookshelf and floorstanding speakers are not sized to produce. A 12-inch polycellulose woofer with a ribbed, high-excursion cone is driven by an amplifier rated at 250 watts RMS and 500 watts dynamic, in a bass-reflex cabinet tuned through dual rear-firing ports. Frequency response extends from 26 Hz to 150 Hz, deep enough to cover the lowest notes of film soundtracks and electronic music with output you feel as much as hear.

Stage 2 is JBL’s home entertainment loudspeaker family, and the 220P is voiced to integrate with it: the same design language, a removable grille and finishes that match the series. It works just as readily with other brands of main speaker, because everything that decides integration, crossover frequency, level and phase, is adjustable on the subwoofer itself.

Dialling in the blend

A subwoofer is set up correctly when you stop noticing it as a separate box. The 220P’s variable crossover, adjustable from 50 Hz to 150 Hz with a steep 24 dB per octave slope, sets where the main speakers hand over to the sub, while the level control matches its output to the room and the phase control aligns its arrival time with the speakers at the listening seat. With an AV receiver handling bass management, the LFE input accepts the receiver’s dedicated subwoofer output and the receiver’s own crossover settings take charge; with a stereo amplifier, the same controls let you blend the sub under a pair of bookshelf speakers for music.

Placement and everyday use

The dual ports fire rearward, so leave some space between the cabinet and the wall behind it, and expect corner placement to add natural reinforcement if the room needs it. Supplied floor spikes anchor the cabinet on carpet, and the auto power function wakes the subwoofer when a signal arrives and returns it to a standby draw of under half a watt when the system goes quiet. The cabinet measures 416 x 405 x 444 mm and weighs 18.7 kg: substantial enough to stay composed at cinema levels, still manageable to reposition while you find the seat where the bass evens out.

The Stage 220P suits home cinema and music systems built on Stage 2 speakers, and any small to medium room where the main speakers roll off before the programme material does.
