Headphones Buying Guide: Over-Ear, IEM & TWS Explained
Headphones Buying Guide India 2025
Over-ear, in-ear, wired, wireless, ANC — how to choose the right headphones for your use case and budget in India.
The headphone market in India has never had more choice — or more confusion. Wired or wireless? Over-ear or in-ear? ANC or transparency mode? This guide walks through every decision so you land on the perfect pair for your needs and budget.
The Four Main Types
Over-Ear (Circumaural)
Cups surround the ear entirely. Best sound quality and comfort for long sessions. Ideal for home, studio, travel.
On-Ear (Supra-aural)
Sits on the ear. More compact than over-ear. Less isolation but lighter for commuting.
In-Ear Monitors (IEM)
Sits inside the ear canal. Excellent isolation, portable. Best for audiophile listening on the go.
True Wireless (TWS)
Completely wire-free earbuds. Best for gym and daily commute. Look for ANC and good battery life.
Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) — Do You Need It?
ANC uses microphones to detect and cancel ambient noise electronically. It’s particularly effective against low-frequency drone (aircraft engines, AC hum, metro rattle) but less effective against voices. If you commute, fly frequently, or work in a noisy office, ANC is worth the premium. For home listening in a quiet room, passive isolation from a good over-ear design is sufficient.
Check for a transparency / passthrough mode too — this lets you hear the environment without removing the headphones. Essential for city commuting where you need to be aware of traffic and announcements.
Wired vs Wireless
Wired headphones always deliver better audio quality at the same price — no compression, no latency, no battery to charge. But wireless (Bluetooth) wins on convenience. The gap has narrowed significantly with codecs like aptX Adaptive (used in B&W PX7 S2, PX8) which streams near-lossless audio wirelessly. For audiophile listening at a desk, wired. For daily use and travel, wireless.
Key Specs to Check
- Driver size — larger drivers (40mm+) generally move more air for better bass in over-ear headphones
- Impedance — 32Ω or below works fine with phones; higher impedance (250Ω+) needs a dedicated headphone amp
- Frequency response — 20Hz–20kHz covers the full human hearing range
- Bluetooth codec — aptX Adaptive > aptX HD > AAC > SBC for audio quality
- Battery life — 25h+ for over-ear wireless; 6h+ per charge for TWS earbuds
