A projector can deliver a 100″+ cinema screen experience for a fraction of what a large TV costs. But choosing the wrong one means a dim, washed-out image or a projector that doesn’t fit your room. This guide covers every key decision for Indian buyers in 2025.

Resolution: 4K vs Full HD

Full HD (1080p) projectors are excellent for screens up to 120″ in dark rooms and offer strong value. 4K projectors deliver four times the pixel density — noticeably sharper on large screens, and essential for HDR content. In 2025, 4K projectors have come down significantly in price — if your budget allows, go 4K. You’ll see the benefit on any screen over 80″.

Brightness: ANSI Lumens Explained

1,000–2,000 ANSI

Dedicated dark home cinema room only. Not suitable for daytime use.

2,000–3,000 ANSI

Light-controlled room with curtains drawn. Good for evening viewing.

3,000–4,000 ANSI

Tolerates some ambient light. Works in typical Indian living rooms at night.

4,000+ ANSI

Can be used with some daylight. Commercial and conference use.

DLP vs LCD vs Laser

DLP (Digital Light Processing) uses millions of micro-mirrors. Delivers sharp, high-contrast images. Most home cinema projectors use DLP. Occasional “rainbow effect” visible to some viewers. LCD (3LCD in Epson projectors) uses three panels for bright, accurate colour. No rainbow effect. Great for well-lit rooms. Laser projectors replace the lamp with a laser light source, offering 20,000+ hour lamp life, instant-on/off, and consistent brightness over time. Premium choice for permanent installations.

💡 Pro Tip

Laser projectors cost more upfront but eliminate lamp replacement costs (traditional lamps cost ₹8,000–₹20,000 and need replacing every 3,000–5,000 hours). For a permanent home cinema, laser pays back within 5 years.

Throw Distance — Short vs Long Throw

  • Standard throw: Needs 2.5–4m from screen. Most home projectors. Best image quality.
  • Short throw: 0.5–1.5m from screen. Good for smaller rooms. Some light fall-off at edges.
  • Ultra-short throw (UST): Sits right against the wall. Under 30cm throw distance. No shadows from people walking past. LG CineBeam HU715QW is a UST example.

Screen Pairing

A projector is only as good as its screen. A plain white wall introduces hotspots and colour inaccuracy. A fixed frame screen offers the best image flatness for dark rooms. A motorised screen is ideal for living rooms where the screen is hidden when not in use. For rooms with ambient light, an ALR (Ambient Light Rejecting) screen dramatically improves contrast and colour saturation.
