The JBL Stage A220P is a 12-inch powered subwoofer designed to extend the low-frequency performance of the JBL Stage series in-ceiling and in-wall speaker systems, providing the deep bass foundation that compact architectural speakers inherently cannot reproduce on their own. In any distributed audio or home cinema installation where ceiling or in-wall speakers are used as the primary drivers, a powered subwoofer is an essential addition for music reproduction – full-range music contains significant energy below 80Hz that architectural speakers simply cannot move without a dedicated woofer of the size and power that the A220P provides. With 300 watts of Class D amplification driving a 12-inch driver, the A220P delivers bass that is physically felt as well as heard.
300-Watt Class D Amplification
The A220P’s 300-watt Class D amplifier is specifically matched to the 12-inch woofer to maximise low-frequency output and extension while maintaining low distortion at high output levels. Class D amplification provides this power output with high efficiency, keeping the subwoofer cabinet cool and minimising power consumption during extended listening sessions. The amplifier includes protection circuits that prevent overload and thermal damage, ensuring reliable long-term operation in permanent installation environments where the subwoofer may run continuously for many hours each day.
Adjustable Crossover and Phase Control
The A220P’s rear panel provides comprehensive adjustment controls for integration with any speaker system. The variable low-pass crossover filter is continuously adjustable from 50Hz to 150Hz, allowing the crossover frequency to be set to the optimal handoff point between the subwoofer and the satellite speakers for the specific combination of products used in the installation. A continuously variable phase control from 0 to 180 degrees allows the subwoofer’s acoustic output to be time-aligned with the satellite speakers, ensuring that bass frequencies add constructively rather than cancelling at the crossover point. Volume, phase, and crossover controls allow precise system calibration without requiring any external equipment.
Versatile Connectivity for AV Integration
The A220P provides both high-level (speaker-level) and line-level (RCA) inputs, making it compatible with both traditional AV receivers that provide speaker-level subwoofer outputs and modern amplifiers and pre-amplifiers with dedicated RCA subwoofer outputs. An LFE (Low Frequency Effects) input is included for connection to home cinema processors and AV receivers that provide a dedicated bass management output. The auto-standby function switches the subwoofer to a low-power standby mode when no audio signal is detected, reducing energy consumption during periods of inactivity.
