LaCie 4TB D2 Professional Desktop Drive

LaCie 4TB D2 Professional Desktop Drive – 4 TB Desktop Hard Drive for Creative Work

The LaCie d2 Professional is a 4 TB desktop hard drive built around a Seagate IronWolf Pro enterprise-class drive spinning at 7200 rpm. It is made for photographers, video editors and studios whose laptops and all-in-one computers have limited internal storage, providing a single high-capacity volume for working projects, media libraries and archives over a USB-C connection.

The d2 line is LaCie’s long-running professional desktop range, and the current d2 Professional uses a USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface with transfer speeds of up to 290 MB/s. It sits between portable drives, which trade performance for size, and multi-bay RAID systems, offering enterprise drive reliability and sustained throughput in one enclosure that sits quietly on a desk.

Key features

• 4 TB storage capacity in a desktop enclosure
• Seagate IronWolf Pro enterprise-class internal drive
• 7200 rpm rotational speed for sustained transfers
• Transfer speeds of up to 290 MB/s
• USB-C port with USB 3.2 Gen 2, up to 10 Gb/s
• Works with Thunderbolt 3, Thunderbolt 4 and USB4 hosts
• Aluminium unibody enclosure for heat dissipation
• Pre-formatted exFAT for Mac and Windows use
• Rated for workloads of up to 300 TB per year

Performance for editing and archiving

A 7200 rpm enterprise drive holds its transfer speed as large files are written, which matters when copying camera cards, rendering video or backing up a full photo library. Speeds of up to 290 MB/s keep 4K footage timelines responsive when editing directly from the drive, and 4 TB holds substantial working libraries alongside completed project archives in one place.

Enclosure, cooling and noise

The enclosure is forged from a single piece of aluminium, which adds rigidity and draws heat away from the drive, assisted by a quiet fan. The metal body also reduces vibration compared with plastic desktop drives, helping the d2 stay unobtrusive in edit suites and recording environments where background noise is noticeable. Status lighting on the front confirms activity at a glance.

Compatibility and setup

The USB-C connection works with USB4, Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 3 and USB 3.0 hosts, covering current Mac and Windows systems and USB-C iPads. Supplied as exFAT, the drive works with both operating systems without reformatting, though formatting to a native file system can suit single-platform use. An external power supply is included, as desktop drives of this class are mains powered rather than bus powered.

Capacity in a working setup

Four terabytes is the working-library size for many individual creators: current video projects, a growing stills archive and rendered deliverables can live on one volume, with completed work moved to separate archive storage as projects close. Used as a backup destination, the same capacity covers a full workstation and its media. The d2 Professional is a single-drive unit rather than a RAID array, so it provides speed and simplicity rather than redundancy, and important work should still be copied to a second location as part of a normal backup routine.

Choose the 4 TB d2 Professional if your workflow has outgrown portable drives and you need fast, dependable desktop capacity for editing, media storage and backup. It suits individual creators and small studios that want enterprise drive hardware without configuring a RAID system.
