Description
WD My Passport 1TB Portable Hard Drive
The WD My Passport 1TB is a portable hard drive in the slim My Passport design — the generation with the two-tone, diagonally textured case that WD Discovery and Chromebook support identify. It puts a terabyte of storage into a drive measuring 107.2 x 75 x 11.18 mm and weighing 120 g: small enough for a laptop sleeve pocket, a camera bag or a jacket, and powered entirely from the computer’s USB port, with no separate power supply to carry or lose.
A terabyte at this size covers the jobs portable storage actually gets bought for. It is a full backup target for most laptops, an archive for finished photo and video projects that no longer need to live on the internal drive, and a carry-everywhere library of documents, music and video that works on any computer you plug it into. The drive inside is a mechanical hard disk, which is what makes a full terabyte at this size and class practical.
Key features
- 1 TB portable hard disk drive in a slim 11.18 mm case
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 connection, bus powered over USB
- Password protection with built-in 256-bit AES hardware encryption
- WD Discovery software for backup, security and drive management
- Formatted NTFS for Windows, ready out of the box
- Works with Chromebook, and with macOS after reformatting
Backup and WD software
WD Discovery ties the drive’s software together: scheduled automatic backup of your important files, WD Security for setting the password and managing encryption, and WD Drive Utilities for checking drive health and running diagnostics. Set the backup schedule once and the drive quietly keeps a current copy of the folders that matter — the habit that turns a failed laptop drive or a lost machine from a disaster into an inconvenience.
Locked down with hardware encryption
Portable drives get left in cars, offices and bags, so the My Passport protects the data as well as carrying it. Password protection with 256-bit AES hardware encryption means a lost drive does not hand its contents to whoever picks it up: without the password you set, the files stay locked. Encryption runs in the drive’s hardware, so it does not slow the computer down while you work.
Compatibility and setup
The drive ships formatted NTFS for Windows 10 and Windows 11 and connects over a Micro-B to USB-A SuperSpeed cable (included, with a quick install guide). Mac users reformat it once for macOS; it also works with Chromebooks. There is nothing to install before first use — plug it in and start copying — and WD backs this generation with a 3-year limited warranty.
For backups, project archives and carrying a full media library between home, office and travel, the My Passport 1TB remains the straightforward answer: a terabyte that fits in a pocket, locks itself, and asks for nothing but a USB port.
