MH-23 Quick Charger Compatible with Nikon EN-EL9 and EN-EL9a Batteries

This is an MH-23-pattern quick charger made to be compatible with Nikon EN-EL9 and EN-EL9a rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, the battery family used by Nikon’s D40, D40X, D60, D3000 and D5000 DSLR cameras. It is a compatible third-party charger built to the MH-23 pattern, offered as a replacement or spare for charging those batteries from a mains supply. The listing states an approximate full-charge time of about 2 hours for an EN-EL9 battery, a 100 to 240V AC input for use on standard mains supplies, and an LED indicator showing charging status.

Who needs a spare charger

Owners of the EN-EL9 camera generation face a practical problem: the cameras remain perfectly usable, but original accessories grow harder to find, batteries are often carried in pairs, and a single charger becomes the bottleneck on a trip or a long shooting day. A compatible MH-23-pattern charger covers the common cases: replacing a lost or failed charger, keeping a second charger in the camera bag or at a second location, and charging a spare battery at home while the main charger travels. It charges the battery off-camera, so the camera stays free to shoot with the battery that is already charged.

Compatibility, checked properly

Compatibility here is defined by the battery, not the camera badge alone. This charger is for EN-EL9 and EN-EL9a batteries as stated in the listing; it is not for the many other Nikon battery types, such as the EN-EL14, EN-EL15 or EN-EL25 families, which use different chargers and must not be placed in this unit. Before first use, confirm the battery in hand is marked EN-EL9 or EN-EL9a, check it seats in the charger bay the correct way round without force, and confirm the indicator lights as expected. A battery that is swollen, damaged or from an unknown source should not be charged in any charger.

Charging practice

Charge on a dry, ventilated surface away from heat sources, connect the charger to the mains supply as its markings direct, and let the indicator show completion before removing the battery; the listing states about 2 hours for a full charge of an EN-EL9, and a battery removed early simply holds a partial charge. Do not leave charging batteries entirely unattended for long periods, keep the charger’s contacts and the battery terminals clean and dry, and store the charger disconnected when it is not in use. Lithium-ion batteries age whether they are used or not, so rotate spares rather than leaving one permanently in the charger.

What this product is

This is a compatible charger made to the MH-23 pattern for the batteries named above. It is supplied as the charger unit; batteries and camera are separate items. Matching the battery type exactly, as set out in the compatibility section, is the whole basis on which to select it.

For D40, D60, D3000 and D5000 owners keeping EN-EL9 and EN-EL9a batteries in service, this MH-23-compatible quick charger is the straightforward spare or replacement the listing describes.
