Description
Audix D6 Cardioid Dynamic Kick Drum Microphone
The Audix D6 is a dynamic instrument microphone voiced specifically for low-frequency sources: kick drum, floor tom and bass cabinets. Its contoured frequency response, running from 30 Hz to 15 kHz, is shaped to deliver the punch, attack and low-end weight those instruments need with far less corrective equalisation than a general-purpose microphone requires. A Very Low Mass Type E capsule keeps the transient response fast and natural, and the microphone handles sound pressure levels of 144 dB and above, so it can sit inches from a hard-hit kick drum without distorting.
Key features
- Dynamic VLM Type E capsule designed for low-frequency instruments
- Frequency response of 30 Hz to 15 kHz, contoured for kick and bass
- Cardioid polar pattern for isolation and feedback control
- Maximum SPL of 144 dB or more
- Off-axis rejection greater than 20 dB
- Transformerless, low-impedance balanced output
- Precision machined aluminium body with steel mesh grille
- No power requirement; standard 3-pin XLR connector
Voiced for the bottom end
Most microphones need work at the desk to make a kick drum sound finished. The D6 starts from a response curve drawn for the job, with the low-frequency body and upper-midrange attack that let the beater cut through a mix built in. That is why engineers reach for it when they want a modern kick sound quickly, in the studio and on stage. The same voicing suits floor toms that need depth without boom, and bass cabinets where the low end must stay tight and defined rather than smeared.
Isolation where it matters
On a drum kit, the microphone hears everything, not just the drum in front of it. The D6’s cardioid pattern and off-axis rejection of more than 20 dB keep cymbals, snare and hi-hat spill under control, which makes gating, mixing and live feedback management far easier. The compact body, 117 mm long and 51 mm at its widest point, positions easily inside a kick drum port or on a short stand in front of the shell, and at 254 g it does not strain small clips or boom arms.
Built for stage and studio abuse
The body is machined from aluminium with a black anodised finish, a steel wire mesh grille cap and a Switchcraft XLR connector, and the model and serial number are laser etched rather than printed. As a passive dynamic microphone it needs no phantom power and shrugs off the handling, humidity and volume that live work involves. The transformerless design with low 280 ohm impedance and balanced output keeps the signal clean over long cable runs to the mixer or stage box.
Getting the best from it
Position is the main control you have, and it is a powerful one. Start with the D6 just inside the port or a few inches from the batter head, then move it: closer to the beater for more click and attack, further back or off-centre for more shell tone and low end. For a bass cabinet, work across the cone and compare centre brightness against edge warmth. Record or check a short pass in the full mix before reaching for EQ, because with this microphone the right position usually finishes most of the job.
Choose the D6 if kick drum, floor tom or bass cabinet is a regular part of your recording or live rig. It is a specialist tool that does one job exceptionally well, and it has earned its place in drum kits and studios worldwide by doing exactly that.
