Description
Blackmagic Design UltraStudio 4K Mini – Thunderbolt 3 Capture and Playback up to 4K DCI 60p
The Blackmagic Design UltraStudio 4K Mini is a portable capture and playback interface that connects professional video equipment to a computer over Thunderbolt 3. It handles 12G-SDI, HDMI 2.0 and analogue sources in one compact unit, with broadcast-quality 8 and 10-bit capture in formats up to 4K DCI at 60 frames per second, and 12-bit capture up to 4K DCI at 30 frames per second.
It is built for edit suites, live production and archiving alike: monitoring an edit on a proper broadcast display or projector, feeding live graphics and fill and key signals, streaming with high-quality camera inputs, or digitising material from older analogue tape decks. A front panel with an LCD, push-button controls, an XLR microphone input, a headphone jack and an SD card reader puts the most-used functions on the unit itself rather than in software alone.
Key features
- Thunderbolt 3 interface at 40 Gb/s, with 45 W host charging for the connected computer
- 12G-SDI input and outputs, supporting SD, HD, 2K, Ultra HD and 4K DCI formats
- 8 and 10-bit capture up to 4K DCI 60p; 12-bit capture up to 4K DCI 30p
- HDMI 2.0b input and output for cameras, monitors and projectors
- Analogue component YUV and composite NTSC/PAL input for archive work
- Built-in SD card reader for UHS-I and UHS-II camera media
- Front-panel LCD, XLR microphone input with switchable phantom power, and headphone output
- RS-422 deck control and Tri-Sync or Black Burst sync input
Connections in detail
The SDI section provides one input and two program outputs with a loop output, at rates from 270 Mb/s through 12G, with 16 channels of embedded audio in SD, HD, 2K, Ultra HD and 4K. The dual SDI outputs can carry simultaneous fill and key for live graphics work. HDMI 2.0b input and output carry 8 channels of embedded audio. Analogue video input accepts component YUV, switchable between SD and HD, or composite NTSC and PAL, and analogue audio is handled by two channels of balanced input and two channels of balanced output on 6.35 mm jacks. A USB-C 3.1 Gen 1 port on the front connects a keyboard and mouse, and the Thunderbolt 3 connection supplies up to 45 W of trickle charging to keep a laptop topped up while it is docked.
Formats, codecs and software
Video sampling is 4:2:2 and 4:4:4, with support for the codec families post-production actually uses, including Apple ProRes up to 4444, DNxHR and DNxHD, XDCAM variants, AVCHD, DVCPRO HD and uncompressed 8 and 10-bit. The unit works with DaVinci Resolve as its natural partner for editing, colour, effects and audio, and is also supported by Final Cut Pro, Avid Media Composer and the common streaming applications. Blackmagic’s Desktop Video software, Media Express and Disk Speed Test are included for Mac and Windows, with driver support for Linux as well, and firmware updates are delivered through the software driver.
Built for desks and racks
The 4K Mini’s compact enclosure is sized for a desktop or for rack mounting alongside other equipment, and it runs from its own AC power connection rather than relying on bus power, which suits permanent studio installation. The front-panel LCD shows the current signal and setup, and the microphone input with software-switchable 48 V phantom power supports voiceover and commentary recording directly through the unit. Reference sync input keeps playback locked to a broadcast house system where one is in use.
Choosing the right UltraStudio
Within the UltraStudio family, the 4K Mini is the model for users who need full 4K DCI capture and playback, professional SDI and analogue connections, and portability between locations, without moving to the larger rack-mount UltraStudio models. The smaller Recorder 3G devices, by contrast, are HD-only and capture-only. Matching the interface to the formats actually in the workflow avoids paying for unused capacity.
Connected to a Thunderbolt 3 Mac or PC with adequate storage speed for the chosen format, the UltraStudio 4K Mini provides the accurate, broadcast-standard monitoring and capture that software alone cannot: what leaves the timeline is exactly what the audience will see.
