Voiced the DALI way

DALI designs its in-ceiling speakers around the same principles as its cabinet models: low mechanical loss, controlled dispersion and a crossover built from selected components with a short signal path. The polypropylene cone resists humidity better than the wood-fibre cones used in DALI’s room speakers, which makes the E-60 practical in kitchens and covered areas as well as living spaces. The tweeter sits in an aeroplane-wing-profile support that keeps diffraction down, and the 3,300 Hz crossover hands over smoothly between the two drivers.

Tuning switches for real rooms

Two sets of switches on the front baffle let the installer shape the sound after fitting. The Focus and Distributed setting changes the dispersion character depending on whether the pair serves one main listening position or a whole room, while the high-frequency tilt adds a gentle lift of around 3 dB where soft furnishings or a large space dull the top end. A compass graphic on the baffle helps orient each speaker consistently during installation, so a pair or a full ceiling array stays aligned. These adjustments are set once, at installation, and then forgotten behind the grille.

Installation and system building

Each speaker needs a 225 mm round cut-out and about 96 mm of mounting depth, and works into a rear volume of 5 to 50 litres, with 15 litres considered optimum. Spring-loaded terminals accept a single run of speaker cable, nominal impedance is 8 ohms, and recommended amplifier power is 30 to 120 watts per speaker, with a maximum level of 105 dB. Use this pair as the front height channels in a Dolby Atmos layout, as surrounds, or as the main stereo speakers in a room where floor space matters. The white magnetic grilles sit almost flush and can be painted, leaving two discreet circles as the only visible trace of the system.
