The Polk Audio RC80i is a two-way in-ceiling speaker built around an 8-inch (20 cm) Dynamic Balance mid-bass driver, and it is supplied here as a single speaker. That makes it the right format for adding one ceiling channel, completing an odd-numbered layout, replacing a single failed unit with an exact match, or covering a smaller room that only needs one speaker. The larger 8-inch cone moves more air than the 6.5-inch models in the RCi range, so bass and overall output hold up better in bigger rooms and open-plan spaces, while the speaker itself disappears into the ceiling behind a paintable grille.

Dynamic Balance drivers

Polk’s Dynamic Balance approach tunes the cone material, geometry and surround together so the driver stays controlled instead of adding its own colouration. On the RC80i the mid-bass unit is an 8-inch mineral-filled polymer cone with a rubber surround, a combination chosen for clean midrange, useful low-frequency weight and long-term durability in a ceiling cavity. The tweeter is a 1-inch metalised soft dome, and because it sits in a ball-and-socket swivel mount it can be aimed toward the listening area rather than firing straight down. That aimability matters in real rooms, where ceiling speakers often end up placed for the joist layout rather than for perfect symmetry with the seating.

Output, sensitivity and amplifier matching

With a total frequency response of 35 Hz to 20 kHz, a lower -3 dB limit of 50 Hz and 90 dB efficiency, the RC80i plays louder per watt than most ceiling speakers and reaches low enough to make music sound complete in rooms without a subwoofer. It is an 8-ohm design, compatible with the speaker outputs of standard AV receivers, stereo amplifiers and multi-room distribution amplifiers, and Polk rates it for 20 to 100 watts per channel. Connection is by spring-loaded clips, so installation wiring is quick and secure. Used in pairs it forms a capable stereo zone; used singly or in multiples it works as surround, height or distributed-audio channels in a larger system.

Moisture resistance and where it fits

The RC80i uses moisture-resistant materials, which extends it beyond dry living spaces into kitchens, bathrooms and other humid indoor areas where an ordinary speaker would deteriorate. Sealed against the kind of everyday moisture those rooms produce, it suits whole-home audio plans that run through wet zones as well as dry ones. Installation and finish

The speaker needs a 9 3/8 inch (23.81 cm) diameter cutout and a mounting depth of 3 1/8 inches (7.94 cm) measured with half-inch drywall; overall diameter is 10 3/4 inches (27.3 cm) and overall depth 3 5/8 inches (9.21 cm). Rotating cams lock the speaker into the cutout without a separate bracket, and the PB LC80i pre-construction bracket is available for new-build work. The grille can be painted to match the ceiling, leaving only a clean circular outline visible.
