The Lunar Red Beosound A1 2nd Gen is the boldest finish of Bang & Olufsen’s compact speaker: a deep red aluminium dome over the same precision two-way system found in every A1 2nd Gen. It is a limited-character colour on an unlimited-use speaker, equally suited to a studio desk, a bedside table or the top of a picnic basket, with waterproofing that means the colour never has to be babied.

Sound that defies the size

A 3.5-inch woofer and a 0.6-inch tweeter, each driven by its own 30 W Class D amplifier, produce a frequency range of 55 Hz to 20 kHz and a maximum sound pressure level of 92 dB at one metre, with bass capability of 62 dB. Sound radiates through 360 degrees, so placement is forgiving: the speaker sounds consistent from every seat around a table rather than only in front of it. Bang & Olufsen rates it for rooms of 5 to 30 square metres, which covers bedrooms, studies, hotel rooms and small living spaces, and the app offers five EQ presets plus full manual customisation.

Alexa and call clarity

Three microphones serve both the built-in Amazon Alexa voice assistant and speakerphone calls, picking up voice clearly across a room. Alexa is set up through the Bang & Olufsen app and handles music requests, timers, questions and compatible smart-home control by wake word. On calls, the same array keeps your voice forward, making the A1 a credible desk speakerphone as well as a music speaker. Multipoint Bluetooth keeps two devices connected at once, and fast pairing support covers iPhone, Google Fast Pair and Microsoft Swift Pair.

Materials and battery

The pearl-blasted anodised aluminium dome, polymer base and waterproof leather strap are built to be handled daily and carried outdoors. IP67 certification means immersion in up to a metre of water for 30 minutes, so rain, pool edges and bathroom shelves are all safe. The 3000 mAh battery plays for up to 18 hours at typical listening volumes and recharges in about 2.75 hours over USB-C at 5 V / 3 A; the same port also supports speakerphone and streaming use. A battery LED on the unit, plus precise status in the app, keeps charge visible.

Pairing and everyday use

Two Beosound A1 2nd Gen speakers can be stereo-paired for a wider, separated image at home, then split again for travel. On-device controls cover power, Bluetooth, microphone, play and pause and volume, so the phone can stay in a pocket. At 558 g the speaker travels in a jacket pocket or hangs from its leather strap on a hook, a bag or a branch.
