The Solid State Logic SSL 1 is a 2-in/2-out USB-C audio interface that puts one SSL microphone preamp, the Legacy 4K analogue enhancement circuit and next-generation 32-bit/192 kHz converters into a portable desktop unit. It is the simplest way into the SSL recording chain: one microphone channel with 63 dB of gain, one instrument DI or line input, balanced monitor outputs and a high-current headphone output. One SSL preamp, done properly

The single microphone preamp is the heart of the SSL 1. Its gain range is 63 dB, enough for quiet dynamic broadcast microphones as well as condensers, and its equivalent input noise is -130.5 dBu A-weighted, with a dynamic range of 113 dB A-weighted. Phantom power at 48 V supports studio condensers, and a high-pass filter cleans up rumble and proximity excess at the source, before it reaches the recorder.

Legacy 4K analogue enhancement

The 4K button engages an analogue circuit inspired by the SSL 4000 series consoles that shaped decades of hit records. It combines a high-frequency EQ lift with finely tuned harmonic distortion, adding presence and forward character that helps a vocal or acoustic guitar sit in a mix. Because the processing is analogue and happens before conversion, it is printed into the take with no plug-in latency and no plug-in required.

Inputs, outputs and loopback

The second input accepts an instrument DI, with a dynamic range of 114 dB A-weighted and a maximum level of +14 dBu, or a line source, also at 114 dB dynamic range with a maximum level of +24.5 dBu for connecting synths, drum machines and external processors. Balanced monitor outputs offer 116 dB dynamic range and a maximum level of +14 dBu, and being DC-coupled they can send control voltages to modular and semi-modular synthesizers. The headphone output delivers 116 dB dynamic range and up to +11 dBu from a high-current design that drives demanding headphones properly. A Mix control blends low-latency direct monitoring with computer playback, and three stereo loopback channels route computer audio back into a recording or stream, which suits podcasters, streamers and anyone capturing calls or tutorials.

Portable power and compatibility

The SSL 1 connects over USB 2.0 on a USB-C connector and can run entirely on bus power, or from an external 5 V USB supply through its second USB connection, which matters when recording into a tablet or phone that should not be drained. It works with Mac, Windows and mobile devices that support USB Audio Class 2.0, including iOS devices. The unit measures 196.8 x 73.6 x 130.4 mm and weighs 0.64 kg, small enough for a gig bag, and the included SSL Production Pack adds instruments, samples and production software from SSL and partner brands.
