The Tascam TSSD-480B is a 480 GB solid state drive built specifically for the Tascam DA-6400 and DA-6400dp 64-channel digital multitrack recorders. It is not a general-purpose computer SSD selected from a catalogue: Tascam specifies the drive’s components in cooperation with media manufacturers, supplies every drive pre-formatted, and tests operation with DA-6400 units, because a drive that hesitates during a 64-track recording can lose material that cannot be performed again. Fitted in the AK-CC25 SSD case, the TSSD-480B loads into the recorder’s front bay and holds approximately 14 hours 26 minutes of recording at 48 kHz, 24-bit, across all 64 channels.

Why recorder media is specified, not improvised

A multitrack recorder writes continuously for hours at a fixed data rate, which is a different workload from the short bursts a computer drive usually handles. Tascam addresses this by controlling the TSSD-480B’s component specification so that production units behave like the tested units, rather than changing silently as commodity parts are revised. The drive design is optimised for durability and stability under repetitive use, and it supports standard SSD failure analysis systems, so a suspect drive can be assessed instead of guessed about. Solid state construction also brings practical benefits in live and mobile rigs: no moving parts, silent operation, and strong resistance to vibration and shock compared with a spinning hard disk.

The AK-CC25 workflow

The drive is installed in Tascam’s AK-CC25 case, which slides into the DA-6400 front loading bay and supports hot-swapping, so a full drive can be exchanged for an empty one between sets or sessions without powering the system down. Removed from the recorder, the same case connects to a computer over USB 3.0 through its micro B connector, letting the recorded Broadcast WAV files be copied straight into a DAW session. Power comes from the recorder through the case while the drive is in the bay, so no separate supply is involved in either mode.

Capacity in practice

At the DA-6400’s main multitrack format of 64 channels at 48 kHz and 24-bit, 480 GB corresponds to roughly fourteen and a half hours of continuous recording: a full festival day, a long concert programme, or several complete performances with room to spare. Engineers who record every show as a safety copy, or who keep a redundant multitrack of a broadcast, get that coverage from a single cartridge-sized drive that weighs approximately 75 grams.

Handling and environment

Tascam rates the TSSD-480B for operation from 0 to 70 degrees Celsius, storage from -55 to 95 degrees Celsius, and vibration tolerance of 15 G peak between 10 and 2000 Hz when idle. Current consumption is 0.53 A during file writing and 110 mA when idle. An owner’s manual is included with the drive.
