The Tascam Model 16 packs three products into one desktop unit: an analogue mixing console with real faders and knobs, a standalone 16-track multitrack recorder that writes directly to an SD card, and a 16-in/14-out USB audio interface for working with a DAW. It is built for bands, project studios and live engineers who want to capture a performance as separate tracks without setting up a computer first, then finish the mix later in software if they choose.

The input section provides 14 inputs: ten monaural XLR/TRS balanced channels and two stereo-paired TRS balanced channels, with ten mic preamps using Tascam’s Ultra-HDDA technology and gain controls with signal and overload indicators across channels 1 to 12. Channels 13/14 add line inputs on RCA and a 3.5mm stereo mini jack, and Bluetooth 5.0 input with AAC and SBC support covers playback from a phone for break music or reference tracks.

Recording workflow

The recorder captures 16 channels at once: the 14 input channels plus the stereo mix. Punch in and out on up to eight tracks simultaneously to fix a section without re-recording a take, and use the per-channel input mode switch to choose between live input, USB return and multitrack playback, so overdubs can be monitored alongside recorded tracks. Class 10 or faster SD media is required, with SDXC cards up to 512GB supported for long sessions.

Mixing tools and outputs

Each input channel has a 100Hz low-cut filter on channels 1 to 12, mute and MAIN/SUB assignment switches and PFL monitoring. Three aux outputs cover two monitor mixes (MON 1 pre-fader, MON 2 pre/post) and an effects send, and the master section adds semi-parametric EQ assignable to the main or sub outputs. Main outputs are balanced XLR, sub outputs balanced TRS, with a control room stereo output, a quarter-inch headphone output and 12-segment LED meters completing the monitoring path. A footswitch connector accepts the optional Tascam RC-1F for hands-free punch-in during a performance.

At a rehearsal, gig or studio session, the Model 16 replaces a mixer, a recorder and an interface with one unit that starts recording at the press of a button, and its removable faux-wood side panels and optional 19-inch rackmount kit let it sit equally well on a desk or in a rack.
