The Tascam MX-8A is a 1U rackmount matrix mixer built for small to medium-sized installations where several sources need to reach several rooms, each at its own level and with its own processing. It combines eight balanced mic/line inputs and eight balanced line outputs on Euroblock connectors, the termination installers prefer for permanent wiring, and adds a stereo USB audio interface to form a 10-input, 10-output matrix. Any source can be routed to any combination of the eight output zones, so a restaurant can run background music in the dining area, a different feed in the bar and paging in both, all from one rack unit.

What makes the MX-8A practical day to day is how much of the system tuning lives inside the box. Each input carries its own compressor, four-band equaliser, auto level control and ducking, while each output has a ten-band equaliser, filters, delay and a limiter. Fifty scene presets store the complete configuration, and control is split between an integrator application for setup and a simplified end-user application for daily volume and source changes.

Input processing that handles real rooms

Microphones in installed systems face wildly different voices and distances. The MX-8A input stage addresses that with switchable 48V phantom power for condenser microphones, a pad and remotely adjustable gain, followed by compression to even out level differences, four bands of EQ including parametric bands and shelving filters, polarity inversion and auto level control. Tascam rates the mic preamps with equivalent input noise of -126 dBu or less and a wide input range, so both quiet speech and loud line sources sit comfortably without external pads or boosters in most systems.

Output processing for each zone

Every line output gets its own ten-band equaliser with parametric bands and shelving filters, delay for aligning speakers across a space, and a limiter to protect the loudspeakers downstream. Two automatic functions work continuously in the background. Ducking lowers the music in a zone when a microphone announcement begins, then restores it afterwards. The ambient noise compensator tracks the room level and adjusts the zone volume to match, keeping speech and music audible in a busy lunch service without making it overpowering when the room empties.

Control for integrators and for staff

Setup is handled in Tascam MX Connect, available for Windows, macOS, Android and iOS, which exposes the full routing, DSP and preset configuration. Daily operation is deliberately separated into Tascam EZ Connect, a simpler application that gives staff only the controls they need, such as volume and source selection per zone. The unit also accepts Ethernet and RS-232C control from wider building systems, and up to eight optional RC-W100 wall controllers can be daisy-chained over a single cable run for in-room control where an app is not appropriate.

USB audio and scene presets

The stereo USB interface lets a computer, tablet or phone act as a music source or a simple recording destination, which suits software and cloud conferencing as well as background music playback from a PC. Because routing, levels and processing are stored across 50 scene presets, one system can hold a weekday configuration, an event configuration and a paging priority setup, and switch between them without re-tuning the DSP each time.
