Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter MUF82ZM/A

The Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter, model MUF82ZM/A, solves the single-port problem of modern Mac, iPad and iPhone models: one USB-C connector on the host becomes three connections at once — an HDMI output for an external display, a standard USB-A port for an accessory, and a USB-C port for a charging cable. It is the adapter that turns a laptop with one free port into a presentation or desk setup without giving up power.

The HDMI output carries both video and audio to a television, monitor or projector. On supported hosts it outputs 3840 x 2160 at 60 Hz; on other supported combinations it outputs 1080p at 60 Hz or UHD at 30 Hz. Which of those you get is decided by the host device, not the adapter alone, so the adapter’s ceiling and the computer’s ceiling both apply — the lower of the two is what appears on screen.

Key features

• HDMI output supporting up to 3840 x 2160 at 60 Hz on compatible hosts
• Standard USB-A port for flash drives, cameras and accessories
• USB-C port for pass-through charging while the other ports are in use
• Mirroring and extended-desktop display modes, depending on the host
• Video and audio carried over the single HDMI connection
• Compact single-cable design for bags and presentation kits

Three ports, three different jobs

Each port on this adapter does exactly one thing, and using it well means knowing which. The HDMI port is the display output. The USB-A port connects a standard USB device — a flash drive, a camera, a presentation clicker receiver, or a cable for syncing and charging another device. The USB-C port is for charging the host: connect a USB-C charging cable there and the Mac, iPad or iPhone charges while the display and accessory stay connected. That USB-C port is not a second display output or a general data port, and planning around that fact avoids the most common disappointment with this adapter.

Presentations and desk setups

The natural habitat of the Multiport Adapter is the meeting room and the lecture hall. Connect the adapter to the host, an HDMI cable from the adapter to the room display, the clicker receiver in the USB-A port and the charger in the USB-C port, and a one-port laptop runs a full presentation session without battery anxiety. At a desk it does the same job permanently: one plug at the start of the day connects screen, accessory and power. Test the full chain — host, adapter, cable, display — with your actual slides or video before an event, because app-level restrictions on protected content can affect what some services allow on an external screen.

Compatibility

The adapter connects to a USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) port on a Mac, iPad or iPhone, and requires macOS Mojave 10.14.6 or later, or iOS 12.4 or later. An HDMI cable is required for the display connection and is not part of the adapter itself. Host support for video output over USB-C is essential: a USB-C socket that carries only data and charging cannot send a picture through any adapter.

For owners of USB-C Mac, iPad and iPhone models who regularly face unfamiliar displays and single free ports, this is the standard, predictable way to connect — three ports, each doing its stated job, in one pocketable unit.
