Elgato Wave Shock Mount

The Elgato Wave Shock Mount is a suspension mount custom built for Elgato Wave:1 and Wave:3 microphones. Its job is to keep the noises you do not make with your voice out of the recording: desk bumps, keyboard typing, mouse movement and boom arm handling all travel through a stand as structure-borne vibration, and a microphone mounted rigidly picks them up as low-frequency thumps and rumble. By floating the microphone in a reinforced elastic suspension inside a solid steel frame, the Wave Shock Mount decouples the mic from those vibrations at the point where they would otherwise enter the recording.

How the isolation works

The microphone sits in an inner frame held by high-tension elastic cords rather than bolted rigidly to the outer chassis. When the desk is knocked or the boom arm is repositioned, the elastic absorbs and dissipates that energy instead of passing it to the microphone body, so the thump that would have landed on the recording is greatly reduced. The suspension is tuned for the weight and shape of the Wave microphones, which is why a purpose-built mount outperforms a generic shock mount with the mic balanced in a frame sized for something else. The steel outer chassis does the second job: it guards the suspended microphone against sideways knocks and keeps the assembly rigid on the arm.

Fitting and thread compatibility

The mount’s native thread is 5/8 inch, the standard fitting on mainstream boom arms and microphone stands, and Elgato includes 3/8 inch and 1/4 inch adapters in the box so the same mount works with arms and stands using those threads, including camera-style fittings. The microphone screws into the mount’s inner ring and the outer frame attaches to the arm, a fitting process that takes a few minutes and needs no tools beyond what the arm itself uses. At 190 g and measuring 13.5 x 11.5 x 3.2 cm, it adds little weight or bulk to the end of a boom arm, so the arm’s balance and reach are barely affected.

Who it suits

Streamers working at a desk they also type and game on benefit most visibly, because the mount works continuously in the background of every session. Podcasters and voice artists recording in untreated rooms gain a cleaner low end without reaching for corrective processing afterwards, and anyone using a Wave microphone on a boom arm gets protection against the knocks that happen when an arm is swung into position. The mount is an accessory only; the microphone is a separate item, and the suspension is designed around the Wave:1 and Wave:3, so microphones of very different weight or diameter are not guaranteed to balance correctly in it.
