Yamaha MG16XU 16-input 6 Bus Mixer

Yamaha MG16XU 16-input 6 Bus Mixer – 16-channel analogue console with D-PRE preamps and USB

The Yamaha MG16XU is a 16-channel analogue mixing console built for bands, venues, houses of worship and project studios that need plenty of inputs, clean gain and a layout a volunteer or engineer can learn in minutes. Ten microphone inputs, flexible stereo line inputs and a set of group and auxiliary buses let it handle a full band, a panel discussion or a multi-source presentation without external patching gymnastics.

It sits in the middle of Yamaha’s MG range: large enough for a complete small-format live rig, compact enough to live on a desk or in a rack-adjacent case. Built-in SPX effects and a two-in, two-out USB audio interface mean the same console that mixes the show can also record it, with no extra hardware in between.

Key features

• 16 input channels with 10 D-PRE microphone preamps using inverted Darlington circuitry
• Four group buses plus a stereo bus for submixing drums, vocals or backing tracks
• Four auxiliary sends, including an effects send, for monitors and external processing
• SPX digital effects processor with 24 programs including reverbs, delays and chorus
• USB 2.0 audio interface, two in and two out, for recording and playback from a computer
• One-knob compressors on the first eight microphone channels for fast vocal and instrument control
• Three-band EQ with swept midrange on mono channels and pad and high-pass filter switches
• Phantom power for condenser microphones across the microphone inputs
• Metal chassis with a clear, colour-grouped layout for quick operation in low light

Preamps and sound quality

The D-PRE preamps are the heart of this console. Their inverted Darlington design produces low noise and generous headroom, so quiet sources can be gained up without hiss and loud sources do not collapse into harshness. Vocals stay natural, acoustic instruments keep their body, and the overall mix has the open, unforced character Yamaha consoles are known for.

The one-knob compressors deserve special mention. A single control adds exactly the kind of gentle levelling that keeps a singer sitting in the mix or tames a lively bass guitar, which is invaluable when there is no dedicated dynamics processor in the rack and no time for detailed setup.

Mixing, effects and routing

Four group buses let you gather related channels — a drum kit, a choir, backing vocals — and control them from a single fader, while four auxiliary sends feed stage monitors or an external effects unit. The onboard SPX processor covers the everyday needs of live work with 24 programs, from plate and hall reverbs to echo and chorus, editable and assignable without menus getting in the way.

Channel EQ is musical rather than surgical: the swept-mid section handles feedback notches and tonal shaping, with high-pass filters clearing stage rumble.

Recording and build

Connect the USB port to a computer and the stereo mix can be recorded directly, or tracks played back through the console for virtual soundchecks and interval music. The metal chassis, firm faders and clearly printed panel markings are made for equipment that travels and gets set up by different hands every week.

Choose the MG16XU if you run sound for a band, venue, school or place of worship and want one dependable console that mixes, adds effects and records, without the learning curve or cost of a digital desk.
