Yamaha MG16XU

The MG16XU is the 16-channel member of Yamaha’s MG mixer family: an analogue console built around the same D-PRE discrete Class-A microphone preamps found in Yamaha’s studio interfaces, with built-in SPX effects and a 24-bit/192kHz USB audio interface that turns the mixer into a recording front end. It takes up to 10 microphones and 16 line inputs, routes through four group buses and four aux sends, and is sized for small bands, houses of worship, school halls and serious home studios.

Yamaha’s design philosophy for the MG series is transparency: the D-PRE preamps use an inverted Darlington circuit to deliver wide, flat response with low distortion, so what comes out is the source, not the mixer.

One-Knob Compression, Explained

Compressors even out level differences – a singer who moves around the microphone, a bass that jumps on certain notes. A full compressor has four or more controls that interact, which is slow to set live. Yamaha’s 1-knob design folds threshold, ratio and makeup into a single control voiced for vocals and instruments: turn it up until the peaks behave. On the MG16XU the first eight channels carry it, which is exactly where voices and direct instruments usually sit.

Groups and Recording

Four group buses let you collect channels – a full drum kit, for example – onto grouped faders before the main mix, so one hand controls the kit balance while the other rides vocals. The USB interface records the finished stereo mix at up to 192kHz and returns computer audio to a stereo channel for backing tracks, streaming and virtual soundcheck playback; it also works with an iPad for field recording.
