Onkyo TX-NR5100 – 7.2-Channel 8K AV Receiver for Cinema and Gaming

The Onkyo TX-NR5100 is a 7.2-channel AV receiver built around HDMI 2.1, which makes it a natural hub for a modern living room: an 8K television, a current-generation console and a streaming setup can all run through it without giving up resolution or frame rate. It decodes Dolby Atmos and DTS:X for height-enabled surround sound, and its high-current amplifier section is designed to drive real speakers, including 4-ohm loads, with control.

Onkyo lists output at 165 W per channel under JEITA measurement conditions; what matters in the room is the receiver’s ability to hold dynamics together when a film soundtrack gets loud, and that is where its power supply and amplifier design earn their place.

Why HDMI 2.1 matters here

A receiver sits between your sources and your screen for years, so its video section decides when the whole system feels old. With 8K/60p and 4K/120p support, the TX-NR5100 passes the signals current consoles and gaming PCs produce, while Variable Refresh Rate prevents tearing and Auto Low Latency Mode switches the display into game mode automatically. Enhanced Audio Return Channel also pulls high-quality audio back from the television’s own apps, so streaming services get the same surround treatment as a disc player.

Immersive sound, with or without height speakers

With height speakers installed, Dolby Atmos and DTS:X place effects in three dimensions. Without them, the Dolby Atmos Height Virtualizer uses psychoacoustic processing to suggest height from a conventional layout, so the upgrade path stays open: start with 5.1 or 7.1 today, add height channels later, and the receiver is ready.

Music and everyday use

Between films, the TX-NR5100 works as the room’s music system, streaming over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth from phones and services, joining a Sonos system with the right hardware, and sending audio to a Zone B line output for a headphone transmitter or a second listening spot. AccuEQ keeps the setup honest by measuring the room rather than assuming it.

For gamers and film fans building around an 8K or 4K/120 display, it is a receiver specified for where screens are going, not where they have been.

Setup is guided rather than guesswork. The on-screen interface walks through speaker configuration, AccuEQ measures each speaker from the listening position, and the receiver assigns levels and distances automatically. Firmware updates over the network keep streaming services and compatibility current, so the receiver you install this year does not quietly fall behind the services it connects to.
