Bose Music Amplifier

The Bose Music Amplifier is a streaming amplifier for homes that already have, or plan to install, passive speakers: in-ceiling and in-wall models, bookshelf pairs, or outdoor speakers on a terrace. Rather than asking those speakers to be replaced with powered smart speakers, it gives them a modern source and 125 watts per channel of amplification. Streaming is built in over Wi-Fi through the Bose Music app, with Apple AirPlay 2, Chromecast built-in and Spotify Connect all supported, alongside Bluetooth for direct playback from a phone. Analogue and optical inputs cover a television or a legacy source. The result is a compact, glass-topped unit that can sit in a rack, a cupboard or on a shelf and quietly run the wired speakers of a whole area of the house.

Designed for installed speakers

Many homes have good passive speakers already fitted, particularly in ceilings, and until recently those speakers were stranded with ageing sources. This amplifier is built for exactly that situation. Rear-panel switches configure how it behaves: it can run as the main network-connected amplifier or as a supplemental unit fed from another amplifier, it can sum its output to mono for speakers spread far apart, and its line output can be set to fixed or variable level. Preset EQ curves for selected Bose speakers, including the 251 environmental speakers and the 791 in-ceiling speakers, are selectable so installed models are driven with the correction Bose intended for them.

Everyday control

Day-to-day operation runs through the Bose Music app, which handles source selection, volume, grouping and EQ for the zone. Streaming services are reached either inside the app or by casting and AirPlay from the apps listeners already use, and Spotify Connect hands playback to the amplifier so the phone is free. A wired Ethernet connection sits alongside Wi-Fi for installations where the amplifier lives in a rack with structured cabling. Signal-to-noise ratio is rated above 100 dB, keeping background hiss inaudible through sensitive ceiling speakers at low evening volumes.

Form factor and installation

The amplifier measures approximately 21 x 21 x 7.3 cm and is finished with a glass top panel, small enough to stack or to mount in a rack with other units for multi-area installs. Because it is a single zone, both pairs of speakers it powers play the same source at the same volume; homes needing independent areas simply use one amplifier per area, linked through the app or by daisy-chaining. Speaker connections are conventional wired terminals, so existing cable runs are reused rather than replaced.
