Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter MMEL2ZM/A

The Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter, model MMEL2ZM/A, connects Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt 2 devices to a Mac with Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) or USB 4 ports. It exists for a common situation: a newer Mac on the desk and a shelf of perfectly good Thunderbolt storage, docks and displays bought for an older one. Rather than replacing those peripherals, this adapter bridges the two connector generations so they keep working.

Key features

• Connects Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt 2 devices to Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) and USB 4 ports
• Bidirectional: also connects Thunderbolt 3 devices to a Mac with a Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 port
• Supports Thunderbolt displays, including the Apple Thunderbolt Display
• Data transfer up to 20 Gbps with Thunderbolt 2 devices
• Data transfer up to 10 Gbps with first-generation Thunderbolt devices
• Genuine Apple adapter, model MMEL2ZM/A
• Compact white design for desk or laptop bag

How the connection works

One end of the adapter is a Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) connector and the other is a Thunderbolt 2 port, which uses the Mini DisplayPort connector shape. Used in the main direction, a Thunderbolt 2 hard drive, RAID enclosure or dock plugs into the adapter, and the adapter plugs into the newer Mac. Throughput follows the slower side of the link: up to 20 Gbps with Thunderbolt 2 devices and up to 10 Gbps with original Thunderbolt devices, so fast Thunderbolt 2 storage keeps most of its working speed. No driver installation is needed; the adapter is recognised by macOS as part of the Thunderbolt chain.

Bidirectional use and displays

The adapter also works in reverse. On a Mac with a Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 port running macOS Sierra or later, it can connect newer Thunderbolt 3 devices to that older machine, which is useful when a studio keeps an older Mac in service alongside current peripherals. It also carries Thunderbolt displays: the Apple Thunderbolt Display and Thunderbolt 2 displays from other makers can run from a Thunderbolt 3 or USB 4 port through this adapter. Note that an Apple Thunderbolt Display used this way needs its own power source, because the display does not provide power through the adapter.

What it does not do

Two limits matter before relying on this adapter. First, it does not support DisplayPort displays: the Apple LED Cinema Display and third-party DisplayPort or Mini DisplayPort monitors will not work through it, even though the connector shape looks similar, because it passes the Thunderbolt protocol rather than a plain DisplayPort signal. Second, it is a Thunderbolt adapter, not a general USB-C adapter, so plain USB-C devices that are not Thunderbolt devices are outside what it is designed to connect. Checking that a peripheral is genuinely a Thunderbolt device avoids most failed setups.

For Mac users moving between Thunderbolt generations, the MMEL2ZM/A is the straightforward, Apple-made bridge that keeps legacy drives, docks, audio interfaces and Thunderbolt displays in service on a current machine.
