Description
Belden 8471 16 AWG Speaker Cable Per Metre – Twisted Pair, Tinned Copper, Jacketed
Belden 8471 is a two-conductor 16 AWG speaker cable sold here by the metre, so you order the length your installation actually needs and terminate it on site. Its conductors are stranded tinned copper in a twisted pair, with PVC insulation and a PVC outer jacket. It is a long-established Belden reference for wiring passive speakers in homes, commercial audio systems and distributed installations where a jacketed cable is easier to run and protect than loose twin lead.
Note the model carefully: this listing is 8471, the 16 AWG version. It is not the thicker 12 AWG 8477. Choosing between them is a matter of run length and load, explained below, and ordering the correct reference avoids paying for copper a short run does not need.
Key features
- Two conductors, one twisted pair, 16 AWG each
- Stranded tinned copper conductors, 19 x 29 stranding
- PVC insulation with black and white conductor colour code
- PVC outer jacket, overall diameter approximately 6.96 mm
- Unshielded construction, as a speaker-level cable should be
- Sold by the metre – order the continuous length you need
- Nominal conductor resistance 4.49 ohms per 1000 feet
- Rated 300 V, operating range minus 20 to plus 80 degrees Celsius
- Suitable for passive speaker to amplifier runs
Why tinned copper and a twisted pair
Tinning coats each copper strand, which resists oxidation at terminations and in humid environments, keeping contact resistance low over years rather than months. That matters in Indian conditions, where monsoon humidity works on bare copper quickly. Twisting the pair keeps the two conductors in a consistent relationship along the run, which helps the cable behave predictably and makes it easier to handle, coil and pull through a route without the conductors separating or kinking apart.
Choosing gauge for your run
Cable resistance rises with length and falls with thickness, and resistance between amplifier and speaker wastes power and can soften bass control, especially with low-impedance speakers. For short to moderate runs in a typical room, 16 AWG is a sensible, economical choice. For very long distributed runs or demanding low-impedance loads, a thicker cable such as a 12 AWG reference is the better engineering decision. Measure the real route, including rises and slack, before deciding quantity.
Installation practice
Switch the amplifier off before terminating, keep strands tidy with no loose whiskers that could short across terminals, and observe the same polarity at both ends using the black and white colour code. Confirm whether your order should be supplied as one continuous length when the route needs it. For in-wall work, follow the building requirements that apply to your site rather than assuming a jacket rating.
For installers who specify cable by reference rather than by guesswork, Belden 8471 is the known quantity: documented construction, consistent manufacture, sold in the length the job requires.
