The Elgato Wave Extension Rods are the official height extenders for the Wave desktop stand, the base supplied with the Wave:1 and Wave:3 microphones. Per Elgato, the rods increase the height of the Wave Desktop Stand by 5 cm with one rod fitted, or 10 cm with both rods fitted. That small change in height has an outsized effect on how a desktop microphone sounds, because a condenser microphone placed closer to mouth level captures more direct voice and less of the room, the desk surface and the keyboard. These rods exist to put the microphone where it should be without replacing the stand or moving to a boom arm.

Why microphone height matters

A desktop stand puts a microphone well below mouth level for most seated positions, especially on a low desk or in front of a large monitor. Speaking down into a microphone from above it exaggerates desk reflections and room noise relative to the voice, and it tempts the speaker to lean in, which varies the distance and the level from moment to moment. Raising the microphone 5 or 10 cm brings the capsule closer to the mouth’s natural axis, so the voice arrives stronger and more consistent while everything else in the room arrives relatively weaker. For streaming, podcasting, voiceover and calls, that placement improvement is worth more than most processing applied afterwards.

One rod or two

The pair gives three working heights in total: the standard stand, the stand plus one rod at 5 cm higher, and the stand plus both rods at 10 cm higher. Which setting is right depends on the desk height, the chair, the monitor arrangement and the speaker’s posture. A useful check is to sit in the normal working position and see where the microphone’s grille sits relative to the mouth; the closer the setup brings it to mouth level without blocking the screen or the camera’s view, the better the result. Because the rods simply thread into the stand’s existing fitting, changing height to test a setting takes moments.

Fitting notes

Remove the microphone from the stand, thread the rod or rods into the stand where the microphone mount sat, then refit the microphone on top, tightening each joint firmly by hand so nothing rotates in use. Confirm the base still sits flat and stable on the desk at the new height, and re-check the microphone’s angle and distance from the mouth before recording. The rods add height only; they do not change the microphone’s own settings, so no software adjustment is needed after fitting them.
