Audio-Technica ATH-AVC200 Closed-Back Wired Headphones

Audio-Technica ATH-AVC200 Closed-Back Wired Headphones

The Audio-Technica ATH-AVC200 is a closed-back wired headphone designed for home listening — music, films and television through a hi-fi system, television or computer. Its newly designed 40 mm drivers reproduce clear mid and low frequencies, with a published frequency response of 20 Hz to 22,000 Hz, sensitivity of 100 dB/mW and impedance of 40 ohms. Contoured, isolating earpads are shaped to fit naturally over the ears and help retain bass, while the large headband works with an adjustable headband support to keep the fit comfortable and secure through a full film or a long listening session. The 3.0 metre Y-type cable gives enough reach to sit back from the equipment, and it ends in a 3.5 mm gold-plated stereo mini-plug with a 6.3 mm adapter included for home audio components.

Sound for music and film at home

The ATH-AVC200 was voiced for the material home listeners actually play: film soundtracks with dialogue that must stay intelligible, music with real bass content, and television watched at night without disturbing the household. The emphasis on clear mid and low reproduction serves that material directly, since dialogue lives in the midrange and film impact lives in the lows. The closed-back housing supports this role by sealing the earcups, which keeps the bass contained and reduces the sound leaking out to the room — useful for late-night viewing — while also softening room noise coming in. This is passive isolation from the earpad seal, not electronic noise cancellation, and its strength depends on achieving a good fit.

Comfort over long sessions

Home listening sessions are long, so the fit matters as much as the sound. The large headband spreads the clamping load, and the adjustable headband support lets the wearer set how the weight is carried, reducing the pressure points that cause fatigue during a two-hour film. The contoured earpads are shaped to sit around the ear rather than pressing on it, which also helps the acoustic seal that the bass response depends on. At 210 g without the cable, the headphone is light enough that the fit, not the weight, is what the wearer notices after the first few minutes.

Cable, plugs and compatibility

The 3.0 metre Y-type cable is a deliberate home-use choice: it reaches from an amplifier, television or computer to a sofa or desk chair without extension leads, and the Y-type split keeps the cable balanced to both earcups. The 3.5 mm gold-plated mini-plug fits portable players, laptops and phones with a headphone socket, and the included 6.3 mm adapter covers the full-size headphone outputs on hi-fi amplifiers and home theatre receivers. With 40 ohm impedance and 100 dB/mW sensitivity, the headphone is driven easily by these everyday outputs, reaching comfortable listening levels without a dedicated headphone amplifier. The wired connection also means there is no battery to charge and no pairing step: plug in and listen.

Everyday use and care

Using the ATH-AVC200 well is mostly about level discipline and handling. Start playback at a low volume and raise it to a comfortable level, particularly when switching between sources with different output strengths. Route the long cable so it cannot be trapped under chair legs or pulled sharply at the earcup entry, and store the headphones on a hook or stand rather than by the cable. Because the closed earcups limit how much outside sound reaches the listener, they suit focused listening at home; for situations where awareness of surroundings is essential, such as cycling or walking near traffic, open listening is the safer choice.

As a complete home listening package — 40 mm drivers voiced for music and film, a genuinely long cable, both plug sizes covered and a fit designed for extended wear — the ATH-AVC200 is a straightforward, dependable wired headphone for everyday use.
