Audio-Technica ATH-S200BT Wireless On-Ear Headphones

Audio-Technica ATH-S200BT Wireless On-Ear Headphones

The Audio-Technica ATH-S200BT is an on-ear wireless headphone for everyday listening: music, video and phone calls from a Bluetooth source, without a cable between you and the device. Its 40 mm dynamic drivers sit in closed-back housings on a lightweight frame of about 190 g, the earcups fold flat for transport, and the internal battery is rated for up to 40 hours of continuous music playback, with up to 1,000 hours of standby, under Audio-Technica’s stated conditions. Controls and a microphone are built into the left earcup, so calls and playback are handled at the headphone itself.

The listing does not pin this unit to one of the colour finishes the model was produced in, so the specification below describes the ATH-S200BT model itself. It is also worth placing the model correctly in time: the S200BT uses Bluetooth 4.1 and Micro-USB charging. The later ATH-S220BT is a different headphone with USB-C rapid charging, multipoint pairing and a low-latency mode; those features should not be read across to this model.

Key features

• 40 mm dynamic drivers in closed-back on-ear housings
• Up to 40 hours of continuous playback, up to 1,000 hours standby
• Bluetooth 4.1 wireless connection, approx. 10 m line-of-sight range
• Built-in microphone and controls on the left earcup
• Lightweight build of approx. 190 g with fold-flat earcups
• Frequency response of 5 Hz to 32,000 Hz

On-ear fit and sound

On-ear headphones rest on the ear rather than around it, which makes the whole unit smaller and lighter than an over-ear design and keeps it practical for commuting and desk use. The closed-back housings help isolate the sound in both directions: outside noise is reduced passively by the cushions, and your audio stays largely private. The 40 mm drivers, a sensitivity of 102 dB/mW and a 32 ohm impedance give the headphone an easy load for phones and laptops over Bluetooth, and the wide stated response is voiced for full-range everyday listening rather than a narrow speech-only band.

Battery and charging

Forty hours of rated playback covers a working week of commutes and calls between charges for most people. The battery is a 3.7 V lithium polymer cell charged through Micro-USB using the supplied 30 cm cable, with a full charge taking approximately four hours. Standby consumption is low enough that the headphone can sit in a bag between uses without arriving flat, though checking the charge before a long travel day remains sensible with any wireless headphone.

Calls and controls

The left earcup carries the controls for volume, playback and call handling, along with the built-in electret condenser microphone. The microphone is omnidirectional with a 50 Hz to 15,000 Hz response, covering the speech range for phone calls and video meetings. Bluetooth profiles include A2DP for music, AVRCP for remote control, and HFP and HSP for hands-free calling, with SBC as the supported codec. After pairing, test music and a call separately, since computers and phones can route the microphone independently of the listening audio.

Simple, light and long-running, the ATH-S200BT suits listeners who want a wireless on-ear headphone for daily music and calls and would rather charge it occasionally than manage settings.
