Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro 250 Ohm Wired Over Ear Headphones

Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro 250 Ohm Wired Over-Ear Headphones

The Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro is the open-back reference of the classic Pro series — the headphone that mixing and mastering engineers have used for decades when the job is judging space, depth and stereo imaging. Its open construction trades isolation for a wide, natural soundstage, and the 250 ohm version is the studio standard: efficient enough for interface headphone outputs, refined enough to reward a proper amplifier.

Key features

• Open-back, circumaural design for a wide, natural soundstage
• 250 ohm nominal impedance — the studio reference version
• Frequency response of 5 Hz to 35,000 Hz
• Nominal SPL of 96 dB with a maximum input power of 100 mW
• Soft velour ear pads for long, fatigue-free sessions
• 3 m coiled cable with 3.5 mm plug and 6.35 mm adapter
• Hand-built in Germany with replaceable parts throughout

Why engineers mix on an open headphone

A closed headphone traps pressure around the ear; an open one lets the driver breathe, and the result is a presentation closer to listening on speakers — instruments placed in space rather than inside the head. For editing reverb tails, checking stereo width and judging low-level detail, that openness is the tool for the job. The trade-off is honest: the DT 990 Pro leaks sound and admits room noise, so it belongs in a quiet studio chair, not a tracking room or a train.

The 250 ohm version, specifically

Beyerdynamic’s finer voice-coil winding in the 250 ohm model pairs with studio interfaces and headphone amplifiers, delivering the detailed, airy top end the DT 990 is known for. Bass is present and extended rather than boosted, and the treble emphasis that defines the model helps engineers hear sibilance, hiss and edit points before listeners do.

Built to be serviced, not replaced

The spring-steel headband, velour pads and single-sided coiled cable are all replaceable, and at 250 grams the headphone stays comfortable through a full working day. Studios keep DT 990 Pros in service for a decade or more because worn parts are spares, not a new purchase.

Driving the 250 ohm version

The 250 ohm DT 990 Pro is designed for sources with a real headphone stage: studio interfaces, headphone amplifiers, AV receivers and the headphone outputs of mixing consoles all drive it to full, controlled volume. A phone or basic laptop output will play it, but quietly and without authority — if your listening is computer-based, a modest USB DAC-amplifier is the natural partner and unlocks the headphone’s actual dynamic range. Gamers with a quiet room also rate it: the open soundstage places footsteps and environmental audio with a width closed gaming headsets rarely match.

Choose the DT 990 Pro 250 Ohm if your listening is critical and your room is quiet — an open-back studio classic for mixing, mastering and serious listening at home.
