Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO X 48 Ohm Open-Back Studio Headphones

Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO X 48 Ohm Open-Back Studio Headphones

The beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO X reworks a studio reference that has been in continuous use since the 1980s for the way producers actually work now. It keeps the open-back architecture and the airy, detailed presentation the DT 990 line is known for, and adds the STELLAR.45 driver system, a detachable mini XLR cable and a 48 ohm impedance that runs properly from audio interfaces, laptop outputs and portable players. Handmade in Germany, it is intended for critical listening, editing and mix checking alongside studio monitors, where revealing small flaws is the point of the tool rather than a drawback.

Key features

• Open-back, over-ear design for spacious, monitor-like presentation
• STELLAR.45 dynamic driver, 5 to 40,000 Hz frequency response
• 48 ohm impedance suited to interfaces and everyday devices
• Detachable 3 m cable, lockable 3-pin mini XLR to 3.5 mm with 6.35 mm adapter
• Velour ear pads and padded headband with fontanelle recess
• Handmade in Germany with replaceable, serviceable parts

Open-back sound for editing decisions

An open earcup vents the driver to the room, which trades isolation for a wider, more natural sense of space and reduced in-head localisation. The DT 990 PRO X builds on the model’s established signature, with a natural treble lift and high transparency that make reverb tails, edit points, sibilance and small balance errors easier to hear. beyerdynamic positions it explicitly as a companion to studio monitors: the headphone magnifies subtle imperfections that speakers in an untreated room can hide, which makes it useful for detailed editing, restoration work and final quality checks before release. Because the design is open, sound leaks in both directions, so it suits quiet rooms rather than recording next to a live microphone.

Driver performance in figures

The STELLAR.45 driver is rated from 5 to 40,000 Hz. Nominal sound pressure level is 97 dB at 1 mW and 111 dB at 1 V, measured at 500 Hz, with total harmonic distortion below 0.15 percent at 500 Hz and a maximum short-term power handling of 100 mW. The 48 ohm impedance is a deliberate modernisation: classic high-impedance studio variants demand a strong headphone amplifier, while this version reaches useful levels from the headphone outputs fitted to current interfaces, controllers and computers, without giving up the resolution the driver was designed for.

Cabling and connection flexibility

The supplied cable is a 3 metre straight lead, single-sided and detachable, locking into the earcup with a 3-pin mini XLR connector and ending in a gold-plated 3.5 mm stereo jack. A screw-on adapter converts it to 6.35 mm for studio hardware. Detachability matters in daily use: a damaged cable no longer ends the headphone’s working life, studio and portable leads can be exchanged, and optional USB-C or Lightning cables can be added separately for direct connection to phones and tablets where a digital lead is preferred.

Comfort and construction

Long analytical sessions shaped the mechanical design. Ultra-soft velour ear pads are replaceable, the padded headband includes an ergonomic fontanelle recess to relieve pressure on the top of the head, and nominal headband pressure is 5.5 N from the spring steel frame. Weight without cable is 292 g. The PRO series construction emphasises serviceable components, so pads, cable and headband parts can be renewed individually. A drawstring bag is supplied for storage and transport between rooms or sites.

For producers and engineers who already trust monitors but need a revealing second reference, and for serious listeners who prefer an open presentation at home, the DT 990 PRO X brings a long-running reference design up to current connection and drive standards.
