Sennheiser IE 4 In-Ear Monitors

Sennheiser IE 4 In-Ear Monitors

The Sennheiser IE 4 is a wired in-ear earphone made for wireless monitor applications: it is the earphone Sennheiser supplies with its evolution wireless in-ear monitoring systems, and it is equally at home plugged into any bodypack receiver or wired headphone output. A dynamic transducer delivers natural sound reproduction with strong bass response, and the earphones remain robust even at high sound pressure levels, which is the working condition that matters on a live stage. Exchangeable ear sleeves in three sizes give a universal fit across different ear canals, sealing out stage noise so the monitor mix can be heard clearly at a safer level.

Key features

• Dynamic transducer for natural sound with outstanding bass response
• Designed for wireless in-ear monitor applications
• Nominal impedance of 16 ohms, easy for bodypack receivers to drive
• Sound pressure level of 106 dB at 1 mW
• Exchangeable ear sleeves in small, medium and large
• High isolation against environmental noise once sealed
• Rugged cable, approximately 1.4 m long
• 3.5 mm stereo jack plug

Sound and isolation on stage

Monitoring is a different job from casual listening. The IE 4 has to reproduce a voice or instrument clearly enough that a performer can pitch and time against it while a band plays around them. The dynamic driver is tuned for a natural presentation with a firm low end, so kick drum and bass register properly without needing excessive volume. The isolation comes from the fit rather than from electronics: once the correct sleeve size seals the ear canal, ambient stage sound drops away and the monitor feed becomes the dominant source. That seal is also what protects hearing in practice, because a well-sealed earphone does its work at a lower level than a loose one fighting the room.

Fit and ear sleeves

Three pairs of ear sleeves are included, in small, medium and large, and they push onto the earphone nozzles in seconds. Trying all three sizes is worth the minute it takes: the right sleeve feels secure when you move your head, keeps the bass full and stays comfortable through a long set, while a sleeve that is too small leaks low frequencies and lets stage noise creep back in. Sleeves are a wear item on any in-ear system, and because these are exchangeable, refreshing the fit later is a matter of fitting a new pair rather than replacing the earphones.

Built for regular live use

The IE 4 keeps things deliberately simple and tough. The cable is a rugged fixed design of about 1.4 m, long enough to run from the ears down to a belt-worn bodypack with slack to move, and the 3.5 mm stereo plug matches the output found on monitor bodypacks and most wired headphone sockets. At 16 ohms impedance and 106 dB sensitivity at 1 mW, the earphones reach full working level from low-powered bodypack outputs without strain. There are no batteries, no pairing and no controls to learn: plug in, fit the sleeves and the system is ready.

Singers, musicians and worship teams stepping up from floor wedges, and engineers equipping a wireless IEM system with a dependable spare set, will find the IE 4 a proven, no-fuss monitoring earphone that has been a standard part of Sennheiser stage systems for years.
