Sony WH-1000XM5 Wireless Headphone (Silver)

Sony WH-1000XM5 Wireless Headphone (Silver) – Noise Cancelling Over-Ear Headphones

The Sony WH-1000XM5 is Sony’s flagship wireless noise cancelling headphone, redesigned from the previous generation with a lighter frame, a new 30mm driver and a two-processor, eight-microphone noise cancelling system. This listing is the Silver finish, a pale, warm grey that gives the clean, minimal design a softer look than the black version.

Two processors – the Integrated Processor V1 and the HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN1 – control eight microphones to reduce noise across a wider range, particularly in the mid and high frequencies where voices and office sounds sit. The Auto NC Optimizer adjusts cancellation to your wearing conditions and environment, including atmospheric pressure changes on flights, so the headphones adapt rather than applying one fixed level everywhere.

Sound quality

The 30mm driver uses a light, rigid carbon fibre composite dome, which improves high-frequency reproduction and gives the XM5 a clearer, more natural presentation than its predecessor, while LDAC support allows high-resolution wireless playback from compatible devices at up to 990 kbps. Frequency response extends from 4 Hz to 40,000 Hz in wired and high-resolution operation. DSEE Extreme upscales compressed music files using AI, and 360 Reality Audio places instruments in a spatial field when listening to compatible content. A supplied cable (about 1.2 m) covers wired listening, including when the battery is empty.

Calls, comfort and daily use

For calls and meetings, four beamforming microphones focus on your voice while AI-based noise reduction suppresses the surroundings, so you stay intelligible in a busy office or on a station platform. At around 250 g, with a stepless slider, soft-fit leather and a headband that distributes pressure evenly, the XM5 is built for full working days and long flights rather than short listening bursts. Wearing detection pauses playback when you take the headphones off, Quick Attention mode drops the volume and lets ambient sound in when you cover the right earcup, and multipoint keeps a phone and laptop connected together so a call can interrupt a film without re-pairing.

Battery and charging

A full charge takes about 3.5 hours over USB-C and returns up to 30 hours of playback with noise cancelling on, or up to 40 hours with it off. Continuous talk time is rated at up to 24 hours with noise cancelling on. The quick charge function is the practical detail most owners use: a few minutes plugged in during a break returns hours of listening.

In Silver, the WH-1000XM5 remains the default recommendation in its class – the headphone to choose when noise cancelling, call quality and all-day comfort all matter at once.
