Aruba Instant On AP22 Wi-Fi 6 Access Point

Aruba Instant On AP22 Wi-Fi 6 Access Point

The Aruba Instant On AP22 is an indoor Wi-Fi 6 access point from HPE’s Instant On range, built for small businesses, cafes, clinics, offices, retail spaces and demanding homes that need proper managed wireless rather than a consumer router’s built-in radio. It is a dual-radio 802.11ax design with 2×2 MIMO on both bands: up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz and up to 1.2 Gbps on 5 GHz, for a combined theoretical rate of about 1.77 Gbps. Those are radio rates, not guaranteed internet speeds, but the Wi-Fi 6 feature set behind them, OFDMA, multi-user MIMO and Target Wake Time, is what improves real performance when many phones, laptops, point-of-sale terminals and IoT devices share the air. The AP22 is managed through the Instant On mobile app or cloud portal with no subscription licence required for the platform itself, supports wireless mesh to extend coverage without new cabling, and secures clients with WPA2, WPA3 and Enhanced Open. A single Gigabit Ethernet uplink with Power over Ethernet input keeps installation to one cable.

Key features

• Wi-Fi 6, 802.11ax, dual-band dual-radio access point
• 2×2 MIMO: up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz and 1.2 Gbps on 5 GHz
• OFDMA, MU-MIMO and Target Wake Time for busy networks
• Gigabit Ethernet uplink with 802.3af PoE input
• Instant On app and cloud portal management, wireless mesh support
• WPA2, WPA3 and Enhanced Open security

Radios, antennas and real-world behaviour

The AP22’s two radios run simultaneously, so older 2.4 GHz devices and modern 5 GHz clients are served at the same time. Integrated down-tilt omni-directional antennas are tuned for ceiling and wall mounting, with peak gain of 4.3 dBi in the 2.4 GHz band and 5.6 dBi in the 5 GHz band on the combined pattern, and maximum conducted transmit power of plus 21 dBm in each band, subject to local regulation. Wi-Fi 6 features matter more than the headline rates: OFDMA lets one transmission serve several clients at once, MU-MIMO works in both directions, and Target Wake Time schedules client wake-ups to save battery on phones and sensors. In practice, one AP22 covers a typical small office floor, cafe or large apartment; bigger or more obstructed spaces should add access points, ideally wired, rather than expect one unit to defeat walls and distance.

Power, ports and mounting

The uplink is a single Gigabit Ethernet port that also accepts 802.3af Class 3 Power over Ethernet, so a PoE switch or injector powers the unit through the same cable that carries data. A 12-volt DC input is the alternative; power sources are sold separately unless a bundle SKU is bought. Maximum power consumption is 10.1 watts on PoE and 8.8 watts on DC, low enough for always-on operation. The enclosure measures 160 by 160 by 37 mm and weighs 500 grams, ships with a combined ceiling and wall rail mount clip, and includes a Bluetooth Low Energy radio, LED status indicators, a reset and LED control button and a Kensington security slot. An optional aesthetic mount is available separately. The operating temperature range is 0 to plus 40 degrees Celsius, and HPE quotes an MTBF of 795,000 hours at 25 degrees, reflecting the unit’s fanless, solid-state design.

Management and security

Instant On is designed to be run without a network engineer. The mobile app and cloud portal handle setup, monitoring, guest networks and multiple sites, with templates and an easy web interface; access points can also form a wireless mesh, which extends coverage into hard-to-wire corners at the cost of some backhaul capacity. Up to eight SSIDs can be created under one network, so staff, guests and IoT devices can be separated, and application and website controls add traffic visibility without an external gateway. Security follows the Wi-Fi Alliance certification for 802.11ax with WPA2 and WPA3, plus Enhanced Open for protected open networks, and the hardware carries EN 60601 medical-environment certifications and a UL 2043 plenum rating. HPE backs the AP22 with the Instant On warranty, listed as a 2-year warranty with phone support for the first 90 days and chat support through the warranty period in current datasheets.

Planning a deployment

The AP22 is an access point, not a router or an internet connection: it needs an upstream network with routing and internet service, plus power by PoE or the DC adapter. Place it centrally and high, on a ceiling where possible, away from large metal obstructions, and survey after installation, since building materials decide coverage more than any specification. For shops and offices moving off an ISP router’s Wi-Fi, a pair of AP22 units on wired uplinks with a small PoE switch is the classic first step into managed wireless, and the Instant On platform lets more access points and switches join later under the same app. On its published specification, the AP22 offers the complete Wi-Fi 6 checklist, simple cloud management and business-grade security in a compact, low-power enclosure.

That combination is why the AP22 is a default recommendation for small-business wireless: verified HPE specifications, no licence treadmill, and coverage that scales by adding units rather than replacing the system.
