The Ahuja PGM-481 is a phantom powered gooseneck condenser microphone in Ahuja’s Phantom Microphones series, made for fixed speaking positions: auditorium lecterns, conference hall podiums, VIP daises and boardroom tables. At 585mm (23 inches) overall, the tall flexible gooseneck reaches comfortably from a lectern base to a standing speaker’s mouth, bends to the exact height and angle each speaker needs, and holds that position for the next speaker. Why condenser, why phantom power

Condenser capsules respond faster and extend higher than dynamic capsules, which is exactly what speech at a podium needs: consonants stay crisp, quieter speakers remain intelligible, and the voice sounds like the person rather than a telephone version of them. The trade-off is that a condenser microphone needs power, and the PGM-481 accepts a wide 9V to 52V DC phantom range. That makes it easy to integrate: feed it from a mixer with phantom power, or from Ahuja’s APS-482 48V phantom supply where the amplifier has none. There are no batteries in the microphone itself to check or replace before an event.

Positioning at the lectern

The 585mm gooseneck is the practical heart of this microphone. Shorter goosenecks force taller speakers to stoop or speak off axis; a 23 inch stem lets the capsule sit 15 to 30 centimetres from the mouth, slightly to one side of the breath stream, for almost any speaker height. Set it once at the start of an event, and each speaker needs only a small bend to make it their own. The flexible stem also absorbs the small knocks and page turns that are part of lectern work far better than a rigid tube would.

Building the complete podium set

The PGM-481 is designed to work with the Ahuja PGB-48, a heavy duty metal base with an on/off switch, LED indication and a balanced output that allows longer cable runs. Microphone, base and an APS-482 phantom supply together form a complete, professional podium set that connects to the house PA amplifier or conference mixer. The 200 ohm low impedance output keeps hum and interference down over the cable distance between a stage lectern and an equipment rack, which in auditoriums is rarely a short run.
