Description
RODE SmartLav+ Lavalier Microphone for Smartphones
This is a broadcast-quality lavalier microphone that plugs directly into a smartphone or tablet and records professional speech audio with no interface, no battery and no app-specific hardware. Its miniature omnidirectional condenser capsule clips discreetly to a lapel or shirt and hears equally from all directions, so the level and tone stay consistent even when the speaker turns their head or the microphone sits slightly off-centre. It connects over a gold-plated 3.5 mm TRRS plug, the four-contact format a phone headset jack expects, and it works with any audio or video app that accepts headset input, including the free RODE Reporter app for field recording.
Why Choose RODE SmartLav+?
Interviewers and creators choose the RODE SmartLav+ because it turns the phone they already carry into a broadcast field recorder. There is nothing to configure: clip it on, plug it in and record, which matters when an interviewee has two minutes and there is no second take. The omnidirectional pattern is forgiving in exactly the situations where a directional microphone fails, since a lavalier clipped in a hurry rarely points perfectly at the mouth, yet the sound stays even. The Kevlar-reinforced cable is built for constant coiling, flexing and tugging on location, the included foam pop shield softens plosives, and the mounting clip with cable management keeps the cable tidy and hidden. With a 67 dB signal-to-noise ratio, 110 dB maximum SPL and a compact 4.5 mm capsule, the RODE SmartLav+ delivers clean, natural speech that sits far above a phone’s built-in microphone.
Key Features
- Broadcast omnidirectional capsule: miniature 4.5 mm condenser capsule that hears evenly from all directions.
- Direct TRRS phone connection: gold-plated 3.5 mm TRRS plug for smartphones and tablets with a headset jack.
- Works with any recording app: compatible with any audio or video app, plus the free RODE Reporter app.
- Kevlar-reinforced cable: 1.2 m cable built to withstand constant coiling, flexing and tugging.
- Discreet, complete kit: mounting clip with cable management, foam pop shield and carry pouch included.
- No battery or interface needed: runs on plug-in power from the connected device.
Best Suited For
The RODE SmartLav+ suits journalists and documentary makers recording interviews on a phone, wedding filmmakers capturing vows and speeches, YouTubers and podcasters recording to-camera pieces and street interviews, teachers and trainers recording lessons, and event teams that need a discreet microphone for a speaker. It is ideal for single-person speech recording into a phone or tablet. It is not a camera microphone: cameras and recorders with 3.5 mm TRS inputs need the SC3 TRRS-to-TRS adapter, sold separately, and phones without a headphone jack need a suitable TRRS adapter for their port. Two-person recording needs the SC6 dual-input adapter, also sold separately.
Setup and Connection Guide
Clip the microphone to the speaker’s lapel or shirt, roughly 15 to 20 cm below the chin, with the capsule facing outward, and route the cable under clothing where possible using the clip’s cable management. Plug the gold-plated TRRS connector fully into the phone or tablet’s headset jack, open any audio or video recording app, or the RODE Reporter app, and record a short test to check level and handling noise. Keep the cable from rubbing against clothing during the take, since cable noise is the most common lavalier problem, and fit the foam pop shield outdoors or in draughty rooms. For use with a camera or audio recorder instead of a phone, connect through the SC3 TRRS-to-TRS adapter, sold separately.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the RODE SmartLav+ work with any smartphone?
It works directly with smartphones and tablets that have a 3.5 mm TRRS headset jack, and with any audio or video app that accepts headset input. Phones without a headphone jack need a suitable TRRS adapter for their port, sold separately.
Can I use the RODE SmartLav+ with a camera?
Yes, with the SC3 TRRS-to-TRS adapter, sold separately. The microphone’s native TRRS plug suits phones, while most cameras and recorders use a TRS microphone input, which is what the SC3 converts to.
Does the RODE SmartLav+ need a battery?
No. It runs on plug-in power supplied by the connected device through the TRRS connector, so there is nothing to charge or replace.
