AKG C414 XLII Microphone – The Multi-Pattern Reference for Vocals and Everything Else

Few microphones have recorded as much music as the AKG C414 family. The C414 XLII is its vocal-focused flagship: a large-diaphragm condenser whose capsule descends from the legendary AKG C12, with a slight presence lift and the spatial detail that helps a lead vocal or solo instrument sit in front of a dense mix without sounding forced. Nine patterns is not a gimmick

Omnidirectional, wide cardioid, cardioid, hypercardioid and figure-8 cover the standard shapes – but recording rarely presents standard problems. The four intermediate settings between them let you fine-tune exactly how much room, and how much rejection, a take gets: a little wider than cardioid for a singer who moves, a little tighter for a vocalist in a reflective room. Combined with the bass-cut filters – 12 dB/octave at 40 Hz and 80 Hz, 6 dB/octave at 160 Hz – you shape the recording at the source instead of rescuing it later with EQ.

Built for loud sources and quiet ones

With pads engaged, the C414 XLII tolerates up to 158 dB SPL, so close-miking guitar cabinets, brass and drum kits holds no fear. At the other extreme, 6 dB-A self-noise means whispered vocals, fingerpicked guitar and delicate room ambience are captured without the hiss floor creeping into the recording. Few microphones cover both ends of that range; that breadth is exactly why the C414 became a studio fixture.

In the room

The XLII excels on lead vocals and solo instruments, and its spatial reproduction makes it a natural choice for distance miking – orchestral and classical recording, drum overheads and room microphones, percussion ambience. It requires 48 V phantom power and connects via 3-pin XLR. A carrying case, pop filter, windscreen and spider-type shock mount are included, so it goes straight onto a stand and into a session.
