Description
Sennheiser MKE 440 Stereo Shotgun Microphone
The Sennheiser MKE 440 is a compact stereo shotgun microphone for DSLR, mirrorless and video cameras, built around two mini shotgun capsules arranged in a patented V shape. Most on-camera microphones force a choice between a narrow mono shotgun that isolates dialogue but flattens the scene, and a wider stereo microphone that captures atmosphere but also captures too much of everything else. The MKE 440 is designed to resolve that trade-off: the two supercardioid capsules create frontal focus on the subject in the picture while still recording a genuine stereo image, so speech remains intelligible and the surrounding ambience is present at a controlled, natural level rather than dominating the track.
Key features
- Dual mini shotgun capsules in a V-shaped stereo arrangement
- Stereo supercardioid pickup with strong suppression of off-axis ambience
- Built-in elastic suspension and stainless steel micro-mesh wind protection
- Three-level sensitivity adjustment and switchable low-cut filter
- Compact all-metal construction with standard camera shoe mount
- More than 100 hours of operation from two AAA batteries
Frontal focus with a real stereo image
The V-shaped pair is the defining idea of this microphone. Each capsule is a supercardioid mini shotgun, and together they cover the area in front of the camera in a uniform stereo field that matches what the lens sees. Dialogue, interviews and presented pieces to camera benefit because the voice is emphasised relative to background sound arriving from the sides and rear. At the same time, music, street atmosphere and location sound retain left-right placement, which helps a scene feel situated rather than detached. Sennheiser specifies a frequency response of 50 Hz to 20 kHz and a maximum sound pressure level of 132 dB SPL, so the microphone covers the full range of typical video subjects from quiet conversation to loud live events without the capsule itself becoming the limiting factor.
Controls matched to the camera
Camera microphone inputs vary widely in sensitivity, and sound sources vary just as widely in level. The MKE 440 provides three switchable sensitivity levels, specified as 23, 42 and 63 mV/Pa, so the output can be matched to the camera and to the subject instead of relying on the camera’s automatic gain. A switchable low-cut filter reduces low-frequency rumble from wind, handling and traffic before it reaches the recording. Battery-powered internal electronics are designed for high dynamic range and to present a suitable level to the camera input. The on/off switch includes an LED that also serves as a low-battery indicator, turning red roughly four hours before the batteries are exhausted, which gives a practical warning during a shoot rather than a sudden failure.
Built for location work
The capsules are elastically suspended inside the housing to suppress handling and structure-borne noise, and a stainless steel micro-mesh protects against wind noise while also shielding against electromagnetic interference. For stronger outdoor wind, a furry windshield is available as a separate accessory. The all-metal body measures 67 by 106 by 128 millimetres and weighs approximately 165 grams without batteries, keeping the rig balanced on smaller mirrorless cameras. It mounts directly to a standard camera shoe and connects with the attached 3.5 mm stereo jack cable, so no separate recorder or sync step is required. The operating temperature range of minus 10 to plus 55 degrees Celsius reflects genuine location use, from cold exteriors to hot, enclosed sets.
Power and everyday use
Two AAA batteries provide more than 100 hours of operating time, and the microphone continues to deliver full audio performance even in low-battery operation before the warning period ends. That endurance means the microphone can stay mounted and ready across many shooting days without constant battery changes. For vloggers, filmmakers, mobile journalists and event videographers who record sound where the picture is made, the MKE 440 offers a single on-camera solution that prioritises the subject, preserves the stereo sense of place, and keeps setup to mounting the microphone, choosing a sensitivity level and recording.
In short, the MKE 440 is not a general stereo microphone adapted for a camera, but a camera microphone designed from the capsule arrangement outward for audio-for-video capture, with the controls, protection and endurance that location recording actually requires.
