Arturia KeyLab Essential 88 MK3 Black MIDI Controller

Arturia KeyLab Essential 88 MK3 Black

The Arturia KeyLab Essential 88 MK3 is an 88-key USB MIDI controller keyboard in Black, giving you a full piano range, a semi-weighted velocity-sensitive keybed and a complete set of DAW and instrument controls in one unit. It produces no sound of its own; it plays and controls the software instruments in your computer, with deep integration for Arturia’s Analog Lab and custom scripts for major DAWs.

Key features

• 88 velocity-sensitive semi-weighted keys, full piano range
• 8 velocity- and pressure-sensitive pads for beats and triggering
• 9 encoders, 9 faders and a 2.5-inch LCD display for hands-on control
• Arpeggiator, Chord mode and Scale mode for writing and performance
• USB-C connection for MIDI and power, plus a 5-pin DIN MIDI Out
• Software bundle including Analog Lab, Ableton Live Lite and UVI Model D

A full 88-key range without the weight

Shorter controllers force constant octave shifting when you play piano parts, wide chords or two-handed arrangements. The 88-note range here removes that compromise, so software pianos, orchestral instruments and layered splits can be played as written. The semi-weighted action is a deliberate middle ground: lighter and faster than a hammer-action piano keybed, with enough resistance and velocity response for expressive playing, in a unit that weighs 8.2 kg and can be moved between rooms or taken to sessions. Players who specifically need a fully weighted hammer action should look at a dedicated piano controller instead; for production work across many instrument types, this action is the practical choice.

Controls for the DAW and the instrument

Nine encoders and nine 30 mm faders map to instrument parameters, mixer levels and plug-in controls, while the eight pads handle drum programming and clip or sample triggering with velocity and pressure response. A contextual 2.5-inch LCD display shows what you are controlling, which makes browsing and adjusting Analog Lab presets from the hardware genuinely usable. Pitch bend and modulation wheels sit where a player’s left hand expects them, transport controls run the DAW session, and integration support covers the main recording platforms, including MCU/HUI control for compatible software.

Modes that help you write

Three creative systems are built in. The arpeggiator turns held notes into patterns with control over rate and direction. Chord mode plays full chords from a single key, useful for building progressions quickly or performing parts beyond your current technique. Scale mode keeps every note inside a chosen scale, so improvisation and melody writing stay in key. Together with Analog Lab, which organises thousands of instrument presets around the controller’s encoders and display, the keyboard works as a writing surface rather than just a data-entry device.

Connections and software

A single USB-C cable carries MIDI data and power, and the keyboard is USB class compliant. A 5-pin DIN MIDI Out connects hardware synths and modules, and a 6.3 mm control pedal input accepts a sustain or control pedal. The included software bundle — Analog Lab, Ableton Live Lite, UVI Model D and Native Instruments The Gentleman — provides a working instrument library and recording platform from day one, subject to registration and download. At 1258 x 88 x 255 mm, plan desk or stand space for a full-width keyboard.
