The Arturia MiniFreak is a six-voice polyphonic hybrid synthesizer that pairs two digital sound engines per voice with polyphonic analogue filters and VCAs. That combination is the whole point of the instrument: digital engines can generate far more raw material than analogue oscillators alone, from wavetables and superwaves to Karplus-Strong strings and noise-based textures, while the analogue multimode filter that follows gives every voice warmth, bite and movement that stays musical under heavy modulation. A 37-note slim-key keyboard with velocity and aftertouch keeps the instrument compact enough for a desktop studio, yet playable on stage.

Each voice carries two sound engines with 22 oscillator modes in total, and Engine 2 can be used to process Engine 1 instead of generating its own waveform. That opens up FM-style clang, ring-modulated harmonics and driven combinations a conventional layout cannot reach. Voices can be configured as six-voice polyphonic, twelve-voice paraphonic, unison or mono, One ADSR envelope, one cycling envelope and two LFOs per voice, all routed through a modulation matrix with seven sources and thirteen destinations, provide the movement.

Modulation and sequencing that invite experimentation

MiniFreak is designed to be played with, not just programmed. The two LFOs per voice have user-customisable curves, the cycling envelope doubles as an LFO or ramp generator, and the modulation matrix makes unusual routings quick to set up. The 64-step sequencer runs across four pages of sixteen steps with four lanes of automated modulation recorded per sequence, so filter, engine and effect parameters evolve with the pattern. The performance arpeggiator adds ratcheting and octave randomisation for turning a held chord into a finished rhythmic figure.

Stereo effects and the MiniFreak V twin

Three digital effect slots can be placed in insert or send configuration, with ten effect types including chorus, phaser, flanger, reverb, delay, distortion, bit crusher and three-band EQ, all in stereo. The included MiniFreak V software instrument mirrors the hardware exactly: the same engines, the same presets and synchronised controls, so a patch created on the keyboard opens identically in a DAW session, and software tweaks transfer back to the hardware for live use.

Connections, presets and build

Balanced stereo outputs on 6.3 mm jacks feed a mixer or interface, with a stereo headphone output alongside. A 6.3 mm audio input routes external sound into the engines and effects. MIDI In, Out and Thru on five-pin DIN, USB connectivity, a sustain pedal input and clock in, clock out and reset connections on 3.5 mm jacks integrate the synth with DAWs, sequencers and modular rigs. There are 256 factory presets and 256 user slots, and the instrument measures 578 x 231 x 55 mm and weighs 2.94 kg, powered from the included 12V DC supply.
