NEKTAR IMPACT GX61 USB MIDI Keyboard Controller

The NEKTAR IMPACT GX61 is the 61-note version of Nektar’s Impact GX controller: a full-size USB MIDI keyboard for producers and players who need five octaves under their hands without moving to a full piano-width board. Its 61 velocity-sensitive keys use a synth action with four velocity curves plus three fixed settings, so the same keyboard can play soft, expressive pads and firm, even synth parts, and its seven transport buttons double to 14 MIDI controls through a secondary level. A modulation wheel and an assignable control knob sit beside the keys, with octave and transpose buttons for reaching beyond the physical range, and Nektar DAW Integration maps transport and track control to the major DAWs. Retailer listings for the GX61 also include Bitwig 8-Track software, giving a complete DAW to start with. The keyboard is USB-powered, so one cable connects it to the computer.

Why Choose NEKTAR IMPACT GX61 USB MIDI Keyboard Controller?

The NEKTAR IMPACT GX61 earns its place for players who find 49 keys just short: five octaves cover most keyboard parts, splits and layered sounds without constant octave shifting, while the board still fits a standard studio desk. The GX formula – full-size keys, transport control, one good knob and a mod wheel, and nothing else to learn – keeps the focus on playing rather than on managing a control surface, which suits songwriters and producers who mix with a mouse but play with their hands. Nektar DAW Integration means the transport buttons behave like the DAW’s own transport, not like unlabelled MIDI notes, so recording takes, punching in and navigating tracks happen from the keyboard. The included Bitwig 8-Track software, as listed by retailers, means a new studio can start producing with the keyboard alone, before committing to a full DAW purchase.

Best Suited For

The NEKTAR IMPACT GX61 suits songwriters, producers and keyboard players who need five octaves in a desk-friendly board, and beginners who want a complete starter setup with included DAW software. It suits home studios where the keyboard is the main instrument and mixing happens on screen. It is not a pad controller and it has no fader bank, so beat-makers who finger-drum and mix engineers who ride faders should consider the Impact LX range, which adds pads, faders and encoders.

Setup and Connection Guide

Connect the NEKTAR IMPACT GX61 to the computer with a USB cable; the keyboard is bus-powered and needs no mains adapter. Install Bitwig 8-Track or your preferred DAW, install the Nektar DAW Integration files for that DAW, and select the GX61 as the control surface in the DAW’s preferences. Choose a velocity curve that suits your touch, use the octave buttons to reach the full MIDI range, and assign the control knob and modulation wheel to the parameters you use most. Place the keyboard at a comfortable playing height with the computer screen visible above it, so transport control stays under your hands while you record.
