The 705 S3 is the flagship stand-mount loudspeaker of the Bowers & Wilkins 700 Series, finished in Black. It is a passive two-way design that places its Carbon Dome tweeter in a separate Solid Body Tweeter-on-Top housing above a curved baffle carrying a 165 mm Continuum bass/midrange driver – the only stand-mount model in the range with the tweeter outside the cabinet.

Why the tweeter sits on top

Inside a conventional cabinet, the bass/midrange driver pressurises the enclosure and that energy reaches the tweeter, blurring the finest detail. The 705 S3 mounts its decoupled Carbon Dome in a solid aluminium housing above the cabinet, physically separated from that energy. High frequencies start and stop cleanly, stereo images lock into place, and the speaker sounds larger and calmer than its dimensions suggest.

One driver for bass and voice

The 165 mm Continuum cone handles everything below the crossover: bass, midrange and voices from a single point source. Continuum material was developed to control breakup behaviour progressively rather than abruptly, which keeps the midrange open and uncoloured. With a frequency response of 50 Hz to 28 kHz (plus or minus 3 dB) and extension from 45 Hz to 33 kHz, the 705 S3 covers most music convincingly on its own, and integrates with a subwoofer where cinema depth is wanted.

Amplifier matching and placement

The recommended amplifier range is 30 to 120 watts into 8 ohms on unclipped programme, with a minimum impedance of 3.7 ohms to keep in mind for smaller amplifiers. Use solid stands at ear height, keep the rear Flowport clear of the wall, and angle the cabinets toward the listening seat in small steps. The Tweeter-on-Top housing should stay unobstructed and be protected when the speakers are moved.
