Edifier R1855DB Bookshelf Speaker (Black)

Edifier R1855DB – 70 W Powered Bookshelf Speakers with Optical and Bluetooth (Black)

The R1855DB is the most powerful of Edifier’s compact 4-inch bookshelf designs: 70 watts RMS of powered performance in a discreet black cabinet that fits on a shelf, a desk or beside a television. With Bluetooth, optical, coaxial and analogue inputs – plus a subwoofer output for later expansion – it connects to almost anything and needs no separate amplifier. It is the sweet spot of the R series for rooms that need real volume from small speakers.

Key features

• 70 W RMS total power – 15 W x 2 treble and 20 W x 2 bass amplification
• 4-inch mid-woofer and 13 mm silk dome tweeter per cabinet
• Bluetooth wireless streaming from phones, tablets and computers
• Optical and coaxial digital inputs for televisions and players
• Dual analogue inputs for a PC, turntable preamp or media player
• Subwoofer output to add low-frequency reinforcement later
• Wireless remote plus side-panel volume, bass and treble controls
• MDF wood cabinet in black finish reduces resonance colouration

Why more power matters in a small speaker

Compact speakers usually run out of clean volume just as a film gets loud or a room fills with people. The R1855DB’s 70 watts keep dynamics uncompressed at real listening levels – dialogue stays clear at low volume and action peaks do not harden. The digital inputs bypass the cheap DAC in most televisions, so a TV connected over optical sounds noticeably cleaner than through its own speakers or an analogue cable.

Every source, one pair of speakers

Optical from the TV, Bluetooth from a phone, coaxial from a CD player and analogue from a turntable setup – the R1855DB switches among them without cable swapping. If you later want deeper bass for films, the subwoofer output feeds any powered sub, turning the pair into the top half of a 2.1 system.

Placement

The cabinets suit nearfield desk use and small-to-medium rooms. Angle them slightly toward the listening position and keep them near ear height on stands or isolation pads; the side-mounted controls make fine adjustment easy once placed.

Desk or shelf placement

The R1855DB works on a desk angled toward the listener or on a sideboard flanking a TV. Small isolation pads or stands that lift the tweeters to ear height tighten the stereo image noticeably. Bass builds up when the cabinets sit hard against a wall; a few centimetres of clearance – or a small trim on the bass control – restores balance in most rooms.

When space is tight but expectations are high, the R1855DB delivers room-filling sound without a receiver or amplifier anywhere in the chain.
