Definitive Technology Dymension DC-65 MAX In-Ceiling Speaker

Definitive Technology Dymension DC-65 MAX In-Ceiling Speaker (Each)

The DC-65 MAX is the 6.5-inch model in Definitive Technology’s Dymension CI MAX series – the company’s premium custom-install line. It is built for rooms where speakers should be heard and not seen: the frame sits flush with a border-free profile, and the micro-perforated magnetic grille can be painted to match the ceiling. Under that discreet surface it carries the same driver technology as Definitive’s Dymension cabinet speakers, and it is timbre-matched with both the Dymension and Mythos series, so ceiling channels blend seamlessly with floor-standing or on-wall speakers in a mixed system.

The woofer is a 6.5-inch mineral-filled design using Definitive’s BDSS – Balanced Double Surround System – which increases driver excursion and output for punchier bass and a more articulate midrange than a conventional surround allows. A Linear Response Waveguide shapes dispersion for a natural midrange and precise imaging across a wide seating area. Unusually for an in-ceiling speaker, the whole woofer assembly pivots, and so does the 1-inch aluminium oxide dome tweeter, so sound can be aimed at the listening position even when the speaker has to be placed off to one side, or in a sloped or coffered ceiling.

Key Features

• 6.5-inch pivoting BDSS woofer with Linear Response Waveguide for even coverage
• 1-inch pivoting aluminium oxide tweeter with 3-position level switch (-2dB, flat, +2dB)

• IP55 rated – safe in kitchens, bathrooms, basements and covered outdoor areas
• Toolless two-piece installation with pivoting dog arms
• Flush, border-free, paintable magnetic grille for a near-invisible finish
• Timbre-matched with Dymension and Mythos speakers for mixed systems

Aiming and Tuning From the Ceiling

Ceiling speakers fire straight down by default, which puts listeners at the edge of the coverage pattern in most real rooms. The DC-65 MAX’s pivoting woofer and tweeter fix that: install the speaker where the ceiling allows – clearing joists, lights and beams – then angle the drivers towards the seats. The tweeter’s three-position switch then fine-tunes the top end for the room itself, trimming a hard, reflective space or lifting a soft, heavily furnished one, without touching the amplifier’s settings.

Where It Fits

A pair covers stereo music in kitchens, dining rooms and open-plan spaces; multiples handle whole-home audio zones; and in a home theatre they serve as surround or overhead Atmos channels that match the main speakers’ voicing. The IP55 rating extends the options to bathrooms and covered porches. Amplifiers between 20 and 150 watts suit it.
